We were walking to the store, Aphmau, Garroth, Aaron, and I. Lucinda and Kim were happy to hear about the cookout, staying home to set up the roof. Garroth had put his purple beanie on to cover his ears from the outside world. The store wasn't too packed, a few people here and there. "Ok," Aphmau said "How about you and Zane go get the plates and stuff, and Aaron and I will get the meat." After that, Garroth and I walk down to the paper section, where a bunch of leftover 4th of July stuff were "Ok, we need plates, silverware, and napkins," Garroth says as I grab the listed items. I was still thinking about how weird the Lycans and my father were acting. What could possibly put them that much on edge. Did all of them know about me? "-ane? Zane!" I hear my brother call before being smacked on the back. Luckly, due to my little abilities, it didn't hurt. "What was that for?" I question, flinging my head around. "What do you mean 'what was that for'? I needed to get your attention." Garroth says, defending himself. "And you couldn't have just called me?" Garroth gives me an unimpressed look. "What do you think I've been doing for the past minute?" He says. "Anyway, let's go." We walked down to where Aphmau and Aaron were standing. "There you are. Come on, let's go," Aphmua says, walking over to the check out. After we finish paying, we walk out of the store and back down to the house. I look over at Aaron, not making eye contact. Does he know? I mean, I know about him. But everybody does. Aarons head suddenly turns to face me, making me turn my head away in panic. Garroth and Aphmau merrily talk the whole way back, Aaron exchanging a few words on the way. I say nothing. When we got back to the house, Lucinda and Kim had cleared the roof, and cleaned the tables. It was a bit past lunch. We had already split up, most people going to the beach right outside the house. I, being the mood killer I am, stayed in my room. I had this big feeling a jolt was coming, but it was different from the rest. Nothing was happening. No ice, no fire, no random lazer, nothing. All I wanted to do was stay away from people. I don't want to hurt anybody like Aar-. NO! Aaron did nothing wrong! I correct myself. Aaron was angered by a traumatizing memory, I haven't seen anything angering today. I will say, I had to leave the room when I heard what it was that angered Aaron. "Zane?" My thoughts were interrupted by my brother's voice. "Yeah?" I say, looking up. Garroth was standing at the doorway, a bit of worry covering his face. "Are you ok?" He asks. "Yeah, I'm fine. Why do you ask?" I say. "You're sitting in a dark room, facing off into nothing," He says. I look around at my surroundings. I hadn't even noticed that the lights were off. "I...Yeah. Just thinkin," I say faintly, looking back into the spot I had spaced off on. I hear Garroth walk over to me, placing a hand on my back. "You're sure?" He asks. I wish I could spill everything. I truly do. But that would just be pure suicide. My dad would kill me. Making myself snap out of my angsty mood, I straightened my posture. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine," I say. "Well, we're going to go to the beach for a bit," Garroth says. "Do you want to join us?" I think about it. I know my jolts are on the fritz right now, which is dangerous. So I probably shouldn't go. "I think I'll pass. Plus, you know how easily I get sunburnt," I say, stating the obvious. Garroth laughs some. "Ok. But, know you can talk to me whenever," Garroth says, getting up and walking over to the door. Oh, god. How I wish I could. After Garroth left, I pulled out my phone. Putting in my earbuds and turning on music, I relaxed. Before I knew it, the afternoon had passed. I looked at the clock. 4:53 P.M. I walked downstairs, bored of just sitting around. My mother and Silvana, Aphmau's mom, were at the table. "Hello, Zuzu!" My mom said, turning to me. "Hello, Zane. It's nice to see you again," Silvana greeted. "Hello. It's nice to see you too. Is there any chance you know where everybody is?" I ask, Indicating to the 'kids' and not the parents. "They're still down at the beach. They have been down there for a while," Silvana says. "Thank you," I say, walking out with a wave. Sure enough, everybody was down at the beach. Celestia was in between Aaron and Garroth, who were throwing the ball back and forth. Celestia was chasing the red circle back and forth, looking like she was having the time of her life. Aphmau, Lucinda, and Kim were sitting criss-crossed, laughing at the four legged animal's attempts to steal her prized possession. As I got closer to them, Aphmau turned around. "Hey, Zane!" She said, waving her hand. "Hello," I responded. "Zane!" Garroth says, making me pull my head up from where I was facing the girls. Garroth walked over to us. Aaron followed close behind. "Did you put on sunblock for the few minutes you're out here?" Lucinda says, taunting me. "Ha, ha. Very funny," I say unimpressed. "Anyway, it's around 5:00. What time do you guys wanna start the grill?" I ask. "Oh, good point! We should probably go up now," Aaron says. The girls sitting on the ground stand up. "Alrighty! Let's go!" Aphmau says, holding out her arm like a pirate on a ship. We walked back to the house. Which isn't a far walk at all. "Hey, Mum! We're going to start the grill. Ok?" Garroth says when we walk into the house. "Sure, Hunny! Call us if you need anything," my mom responds. "Ok! So how are we gonna do this?" Garroth turns to us. "I can grill," Aaron offers. "I'll do the table!" Aphmau says. "I'll help Aphmau with the table," Lucinda follows. Kim also joined them. "Ok. Well I'll help Aaron with the grill," Garroth says. Everybody turns to me. I hate when this happens. My jolts act up when it happens. "I'll do anything." I say quickly. Trying to get the attention off of me. "You'll help Garroth and me with the grill," Aaron says, putting a hand on my shoulder. You see, Aphmau has been working with me for years. Trying to get me more comfortable with things like hugs and any kind of physical affection. I don't like it. One: I get nervous that a jolt will happen. And two: I hate the feeling of it. I don't know why, but it feels like something is trying to grab me. It got worse after the lodge. So maybe, just maybe, that's why I tensed up when I felt Aaron's hand on my shoulder. Either Aaron noticed my actions, or he just needed his hand. But, he took his hand off of me. "Let's go," Aphmau says, making her way up the stairs. We all followed her up to the roof. The girls go over to the table. Aaron leads Garroth and me to the grill. "Ok. So, what do we do?" I ask, never really having used a grill before. I've watched people do it. But, it's not something I've kept in my head. "Well we have the coal," Aaron says, pointing to a bag next to the grill. (I don't know how you properly start a grill. I'm just making up how I think you do it.) "We just need a lighter and the meat. Garroth could you grab the meat? I think there is a lighter in the drawer next to it," Aaron says, finishing the instructions. Garroth nods and walks back down the stairs. I watch him till he's out of sight, for no apparent reason. When I turned back Aaron was dumping coal into the grill. "Is there any way I could help? I'm being pretty useless just standing around," I say. Aaron placed the bag back down. "You're not being useless. This job just doesn't require a lot of people," Aaron said. "So useless?" Aarons lets out a sigh. "Got the meat and a lighter!" Garroth says out of nowhere. "AAH!" I scream right after Garroth says that. "Chill, baby brother. It's just me." Garroth says with a laugh. "Well you can't just come out of nowhere like that!" I say. I feel the center of my palm warm up. Fire. It's because we're talking about a grill. Fire is one of the worst jolts to get at a random time. "I..um, forgot something on my bed. Be right back!" I say, speed walking to the stairs. "Okay?" I heard Garroth say. I ran down into the bathroom. Turning on the faucet, I shove my hand under the water. Steam rose up. Well that could have gone a whole lot worse. Now I just have to grab something from my bed to seem like I was telling the truth. I walk into the bedroom, looking for something to grab. Pillow? No, that's stupid. Lamp? That's even more ideotic. "Hey, Guys! I'm back with my lamp!" I finally decided on moving my notebook into my bag, and just saying I did that. Probably should have started off like that. I walk back up the stairs and over to the roof. "Did you get what you needed, Zane?" Garroth asked. "Yeah. Just had to move something into my bag," I said, pointing my thumb to the door I just walked out of. Garroth and Aaron had lit the grill and had put the meat on. Both of them had charcoal on their hands. "Hey, guys!" I turned around at the high pitched voice. "Look! We finished the tables," Aphmau said, presenting the set table with her arms out. "Good job, Baby," Aaron said, side-hugging the small girl. "Lucky. You get hugs all the time," Garroth fake whined. "Oh, don't worry, Big Brother. I'm sure Laurence would LOVE to hug you all day," I said unconsciously. It just slipped out. "ZANE!" Garroth yelled. his face going bright red. The girls laughed, Aaron included. We all knew that Garroth and Laurence liked each other. Back at home, K.C. and Aphmau would talk about how they were "sO gOoD fOr EaCh OtHeR" and stuff like that. "Garroth, I'M sure that your little brother would love to give you hugs," Aphmau said, smirking at me. I glared at her. How dare she! And right after I complimented one of her ships. I thought she was my friend. "Oh, yeah! You're right," Garroth said, smirking with the same evilness Aphmau had. He started to walk closer to me with his arms raised. "No..NO!" I said, holding my pointer finger up at him. "I'll tickle you." I know it's a childish threat, but it's all I've got to work with. Garroth is not a very ticklish guy. But, I've lived with him my entire life. I know where he's ticklish, and he knows that. So, that's probably the reason he stopped in his tracks, backing off a bit. Aphmau and the girls were still laughing at our little sibling rivalry. "Anyway," Aaron said, breaking up the fight. "Should we call the parents up now?" Aphmau her hands out, both in thumbs up positions. "Yep! Let's do this!" She said. Aphmau, Kim, and Aaron walked down to the stairs. "Why did we do this big dinner again?" I ask, suddenly releasing how random it is. "Um, do we need a reason?" Lucinda said, smiling. "Yeah!" Garroth agreed "Well it's just odd," I say, crossing my arms over my chest, and moving my weight to one leg. "If you really need a reason, just think of it as a proposal celebration," Lucinda said. "Whatever." "You don't care about Aphmau and Aaron getting married?" Garroth said tauntingly. "I do! I was just saying it was odd! You were the one who tied this into Aphmau and Aaron," I say. Both Garroth and Lucinda laugh. "We got them!" Aphmau's voice called. "And we got Melissa," Kim followed. "You guys were planning a party, and didn't tell me?!" Melissa said, a smile on her face. "Dinner. Not a party," I corrected. "Same thing!" The brown haired werewolf said. My Mom and Rachel came walking up the stairs. "Hello, sweeties. What are you talking about?" Rachel said. "Oh, we were talking about Garroth's big crush on Laurence," Lucinda said. "AAH! I didn't know my Gar Gar had a crush!" My mom blurted out, turning to Garroth. "No, Mum! It's not a crush! They're lying!" Garroth said, his bright red face making his statements pointless. My mother kept questioning Garroth as he tried to deny anything she shot at him. "What's all the commotion about?" Derek, Aaron's father, asked, my father following right behind him. "Garroth's crush!" Aphmau giggled. "It's not a crush!" Garroth yelled over all the laughter. "And who is this crush?" My, obviously formal, father said. "Laurence. A kid on our street," Aphamu, again, answered my father. "Laurence... The kid with light brown hair?" My father asked, getting a nod from Aphmau and Lucinda. "Oh, that boy! The one you live with!" My mother said. "Oh, Irene! Can we just start the dinner," Garroth said, trying to get everybody away from the subject at hand. "Haha! Fine," Aphmau said. We all walked over to the table as Aaron checked on the meat. The sun was starting to set, making the sky an orangy-yellow mix with pink tinted clouds. Gorgeous, in my opinion. It had been about an hour since we started eating. We had all spread out, talking, eating, anything else you would do. Derek and my father kept looking at each other, sharing quick conversions from time to time. We had lights that raped around the poles, helping us see with the sun pretty much gone. "Zane," Aphamu said, walking up to me with a plate in her hand. On the plate, there was a half eaten burger. "Hello?" I say, not really knowing what else to say. "Why aren't you talking with everybody?" She questioned. I had been leaning against the railing that faced the beach, kinda' watching everybody else. I raised an eyebrow, the only one visible, at Aphmau. "What did you expect from me?" I said, referring to my antisocial personality. "You've gotten better at socializing. And you're not going to continue to get better if you just sit in a corner!" Aphamu said, pouting. "Aphmau, I-" "Nope! Go talk to your big brother or something!" Aphmau interrupted me, pushing me towards where the blond headed werewolf was standing. Garroth turned around when he heard my footsteps. "Hey, Zane! Where have you been?" He questioned. "I was standing over there," I said, pointing to where I had previously been. "But, Aphmau told me I had to socialize." Garroth smirked. "Well good. You need to talk more!" He said. I looked at him, unimused. "Anyway. Have you got anything to eat tonight?" Garroth asked. "No. I've really just been standing there this whole time," I responded. "Doing nothing the whole time?" Garroth says, looking at me like I was crazy. "Jeez, you really are one with the shadow," Haha...Yep! That's me, the boy in the shadows. I could kill you in one swoop of my hand...Garroth said something about getting me food, but I didn't really hear him. My father and Derek were looking at me and Aaron, wipering about something. "Hey, Garroth. I'm gonna go to the bathroom," I say. "Oh...Okay?" He says, nodding. I walk past him and down the stairs. Something's going on, I just know it. What if it was Ein who Aaron saw? No! Nonsense. It couldn't be. Thoughts of the lodge flood into my mind. The last time I saw Garroth before Ein took me, The dark room that I sat in as I watched my body be used for terrible reasons, Aaron's lifeless looking body. The images feel like they're spinning around my head. It makes me feel horrible, and I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. Aaron and Aphmau almost lost their love. That alone must be painful for them. I looked down at my hand, which had been covered in ice. I'm so confused. What's going on with our fathers? Was it really Ein that Aaron saw? Will I ever get used to Garroth being a werewolf? "Zane." "AAH!" The sudden voice scared me. Ice shot from my hand, hitting and sticking onto the wall. I felt my heart sink. Slowly, I turn around. Derek was standing with a shocked expression. My father was standing next to him, anger and disappointment in his eyes. "Dad I- It's not- You scared me," I said, knowing there was no excuse for this mess up. My father stomped up to me, grabbing my shoulders, hard. "Are you an idiot! What if that had been one of your friends?" He yelled into my face. "Garte-" Derek said, trying to talk. "No! Zane, do I need to watch you all the time!?" My father said, pushing me up against the wall. "No. Dad, I-" "Do I need to shut you out again?! I won't hesitate to!" My father threatened. "Garte, please," Derek attempted to talk again. This time my father actually listened to him. "Derek, do you know how bad this would have been if we were somebody else?!" Derek stayed silent. My father sighed. "Zane, go to your room, and don't come out until tomorrow," He said. "What I'm I? 5?" Big mistake on my part. Talking back to my, already mad, father. His eyebrows pushed down farther into a V shape. "Go! Now! And I don't want you talking to Garroth, or anybody for that matter!" He yelled, pointing his hand in the direction of my room. I stand up off the wall, which I had been leaning on a second ago. "What about the ic-," I attempted to mubble. "Go!" My father interrupts. Quickly, I look up at Derek. His face is straight, but it was obvious that he is shaken by what just happened. I retret back to my room, shutting the door behind me. I feel hot water run down my cheeks and fade into my mask. Right now is not the time I want to be reminded about my abilities. I can't even cry normally. I walk over to my dresser and grab pajamas. I walk into the bathroom, changing and getting ready for bed. Throughout the way, crying silently. It was around 9:15 P.M. when I crawled into bed. Why did that have to happen? Why can't I just control myself? Ah, One of my greatest weaknesses: Being all alone after a bad situation. My thoughts just take over as I roll over under the covers. Aaron was angry at something that almost killed him. Something that almost ruined his life. I just got scared by someone calling my name. Irene I AM a failure..."Zane?" I heard Garroth call from the hallway. I guess he was just calling to see if I answered instead of knowing where I am, because he left to call for me somewhere else, never going in our bedroom. The thought of harming Garroth or any of my friends came to mind. I hate this...I hate this so much. I really am a child who just got sent to their room, hu? Even though I tried, I couldn't sleep. I sat up, reaching over to get a glass of water that had been left on the nightstand. And, with the luck I've had today, Garroth walked in the room. On any other day this would be very fine, but my dad told me not to talk to Garroth. If you have siblings, you know it's so hard to ignore them. They will just badger you until you can't take it anymore. "Zane! There you are," Garroth said. "I was calling for you. Did you not hear me?" The only response he got from me was my back. I rolled over in the covers, facing away from him. "Zane? Are you ok?" He asked. Again, no response. "Listen, I heard yelling earlier," My heart froze. "I didn't hear what it was about, but it sounded like dad... Was he yelling at you?" I can't talk to you, Garroth! Go to bed! Sleep! "If you're not going to talk, I won't force you. But I'm here anytime,"After that Garroth grabbed something, and walked into the bathroom. Well that was close. I just want to have it all go away. This is supposed to be a vacation. Aaron has mostly recovered, we can just forget everything! The lodge, Aaron's secret, Garroth's transformation, my stupid powers. They can all go away. Bye, bye! I close my eyes, hoping to drift off, but it doesn't happen. Garroth opens the door to the bathroom, letting in unwanted light. There was a pause of silence. I knew that he was standing there "Good night, baby brother," I heard him say before the sound of his footsteps kicked in, fading off to his bed. Again, I try to fall asleep, nothing happens. This day was going so well before, why did it have to go down hill? Anxiety of my father came pouring in. What's he going to say tomorrow? What will he think if he finds out that Garroth overheard his yelling? Gosh I'm gonna be dead... I practically stayed up all night thinking about everything. The little sleep I got was filled with nightmares. It was around 5:30 when I gave up trying to get any peace. I sat up with, what I would say, little strength. Over the night I had jolted so many times to the point I didn't even know what jolt was what. I had ice frozen down my arm, so I decided to take a shower. Grabbing some clothes to change into after, I walked into the bathroom. When I looked into the mirror my hair was a mess, my eyes were still rimmed with red, and I had a bit of blood coming out of a tiny cut in my chin. Where'd that come from? Jolt probably. I thought, answering myself. My mask had fallen off somewhere in my sleep, and was most likely somewhere in my bed. I hopped into the shower, letting the warm water melt the little iceberg I had frosted onto my arm. Soon enough, my goal of melting the ice was fulfilled. I washed my hair before stepping out of the shower and dying off. I got dressed, fixing my hair so that it covered my bad eye. Again, I looked into the mirror. "I'm coming~" A voice said, sounding like it was right behind me. I flung around, slamming my fist into the wall. Pain sheared through my hand. "Did you think you could keep me away forever?" The voice questioned, this time sounding like it was right next to my left ear, the side that I had swung at the wall with. The voice sounded so furmiliar, but stayed unameble. "Who are you?" I whispered. "Zane!" Garroth's voice called from outside the door, "Are you ok?! What's going on?!" I looked around one more time before opening the door. "Yeah, I'm fine. Sorry for scaring you," I said. "What happened? Why's your hand bleeding?" I looked down at my hand, which had a small cut on one of my knuckles. "I- um...Just got scared. Thought I felt something touch me," I lied. "What's up with you, baby bro?" Garroth questioned, his ears dropping slightly. Ears. "Nothing's wrong, Garroth," I said, grabbing my dirty clothes from the bathroom and putting them in a hamper. "Then why didn't you talk when I asked you about dad's screaming?" Garroth said. I froze for a second. "Garroth, I was just upset," I said. "I'm sorry for not speaking." Garroth's ears went up a bit. "It's ok. Sorry for getting mad. I was just worried about you," he said. There was a knock on the door. Garroth opened the door. Aphmau was standing in front of him when he did. "Hey, Garroth! I just came to tell you and Zane breakfast is ready," The little girl said. "Okay. Thanks, Aph," Garroth said. Aphmau smiled and walked back down stairs. "Ready for breakfast?" Garroth asked me. My father will be down there... He can't do anything if everybodys around. "Sure.." We walk down the stairs and into the kitchen. "Hello~ ,my Gar Gar and Zu Zu," Our mother warmly greeted us. "Hi, Mum!" Garroth said, being the star son he is. "What's for breakfast?" Aphmau, who was standing a few feet away next to Aaron, responded, "pancakes!" Just like Aphmau had said, a plate of pancakes was sitting on the table. A plate and silverware in front of each seat. "Ah, cool! I love pancakes," Garroth says, tail wagging. I hear footsteps, and turn around to see my father. I take a step back, lightly bumping into Garroth. I saw the anger in my father's eyes when we made eye contact for a split second before he turned over to my mother, his eyes softening. He hates me, no, despises me, right now especially. "You good?" I heard Garroth say, our shoulders still touching. "I- Yeah," I responded, regaining my cool. "Okay. Let's get eatin'!" Aphmau said to everybody, seeing as all of us were just standing around. Throughout breakfast I felt my father's eyes on me, watching me with hatred. "So how did everybody sleep?" Melissa said, trying to start up a conversation. "Good! I had a lot of fun last night, so it was really easy to fall asleep," Aphmau responded. "Same here," Aaron said. Lucinda, Kim, my mom and Rachel agreed. My father and Derek stayed quiet. "Zane, Garroth, how about you?" Melissa asked. "Or did you stay up all night having a pillow fight?" Aaron joked, referring to our sibling fight yesterday. "Fine," I answered blankly. Garroth looked at me through the corner of his eye. "Yeah... Fine," Garroth said, sounding unsure. We finished up breakfast and, like usual, we split up into 'Kids' and Parents. "So what do you guys wanna do?" Aphmau said. "Hm. We could go out on the town," Aaron suggested. "Sure! Let's do that," Lucinda said. "No," Derek's voice said from the doorway of the kitchen. "Why, Dad?" Melissa asked. "Reasons," Derek blankly responded. Melissa was about to say something else when she was interrupted. CRASH!
