Aya

For the past twenty minutes, I didn't move an inch, I was literally glued to my spot, trying to process Binta's heavy words and come to terms with them, but so far it was not working, I was still in denial and thought maybe it could be a joke, or some kind of prank, because it just doesn't make sense, I've been trying to make it make sense but it's just not adding up.

How could he possibly get married? That too out of the blue, without telling me at least once and on a Wednesday? Who gets married on Wednesdays?

Wait!

Hold on!

Could this be what he and Sadiq were talking about the other day? Could this be what they planned to happen on 'Wednesday'? National mosque, 11am.....? I think it is. Hafeez really got married without telling me.

But still, I had a little hope that it might not be like that, something in me was still fighting with that fact, so without wasting more time, I ran up the stairs and went straight to the penthouse with Binta following me behind.
I bursted the bedroom door open and walked inside, making them tone their loud chatters down and turn their attention to me.

"Wannan ce uwar gidan koh?; she is the first wife, right?" One of the numerous women asked, from her accent, I could tell that she was either from Katsina or Zamfara state.

"Eh! Ita ce; Yes She's the one" another one replied her "amma kamar na taba ganin ta a wani guri; but I feel like I've seen her somewhere"

"A TV bah? AY ce, wadda tayi film din Zarah; on TV right? That's AY, the one who starred in Zarah" one of the youngsters said as she grinned creepily at me.

"Who are you people?" I Said, trying my best to do away with the thousands of emotions I had inside me "and why are you in my house?"

Another youngster stood up with a hideous smirk on her face "aunty, it's no longer your house, you'll be sharing it with my best friend from now on"

"Exactly, so keep the attitude on the low, we have just as much rights over this house as you do" another one spoke and high fived the other, which honestly just made me chuckle, I don't know why but I found it funny.

"You-" Binta cut me off "let's go" I didn't get a chance to say anything else, she just dragged me out of the penthouse and back to my room, where she locked the door and made me sit on the bed.

"Were you really going to respond to them?" She raised an eyebrow.

"You heard what they were saying Binta"

"But you didn't see me jumping up to retaliate, because I know they don't deserve the attention, it's not even worth it" she said "they're looking for the slightest chance to get to your head and you were about to make it much easier for them"

"But I-"

"But nothing, you really need to learn how to control yourself, you weren't even supposed to go there in the first place because they're not your problem and they don't have the answers to any of your question, Hafeez does, he's the one you should be confronting, not them"

She's right.

"I wasn't thinking straight, I was confused and needed to clarify the whole thing, that's why I just....ran up there" I sighed "I'm aching to see how he's going to show his face though, if he has any decency and shame left, he wouldn't even try to look at me again"

"Well, he's a man, and trust me, they're never out of words to defend themselves" she said "but seriously, this is the height of humiliation"

"Humiliation is an understatement, no word can describe this" I swallowed "not like I care about his doings, but the least he could've done is tell me about it, I would-" I stopped abruptly when I heard the noises getting louder once again, and after a while, silence ensued.
