CHAPTER FIFTY FIVE
turn around

Freda

Lucious had asked Freda how far she was willing to go to get Hakeem back, and she said that she was willing to go to hell and back. She meant those words because Hakeem hated her right now and that wasn't sitting right with her. That was why she was in the studio, about to record a song for Hakeem to hear.

All of the Lyons, and a lot of other people, thought Freda was hellish and that wasn't cool. Because it wasn't true. She knew it was time to tone down her gun talk. It was time to stop with her violent lifestyle completely because she didn't want to lose any more respect than she already had. That was what the song was about—turning her life around.

Lucious was there because he was eager to hear what she was about to say. Freda was glad he was there because some of the lyrics were about him. Some were also about Hakeem and her life in general.

Lucious played the instrumental and she started rapping.

FREDA :

I wake up in the morning, what I'm thankful for?
But you, my God, is what I'm thankful for
I could see my life, it flash behind yours
But when I look at you, I'm seeing so much more

Freda started rapping about her opportunity to become an Empire artist, and about her violent ways. She made sure Hakeem understood that when she was with him, all of those violent thoughts faded away.

FREDA :

I thank God, I could never get enough of this
Now I'm here and they want me, I'm such a lucky bitch
I'm a killer, and on me, I'mma clutch the fifth
But when I'm with you, boy, we on a different tip

A different tip
I'm a survivor
You know I been through this, it's like I lived through this

It was time to talk about how grateful she was for Lucious. He didn't have to change her life, but he did.

FREDA :

Everybody know Freda, she hit the ground and go
You put me in the booth and we tore it down for sure
It was a time when I didn't have nothing, you was there for me
Instead of pretending, acting just like you care for me

Lucious liked that a lot. She saw him smiling and nodding his head in approval. Now it was time for Hakeem to know he would always have her loyalty too.

FREDA :

And you know I never ran, never will homie
I knew before I shot that they would have a bed for me

But this the price you pay when the Devil work
You put your heart with mine, I will never hurt
They burn when the fire's on
It can never affect me or what side I'm on
It don't matter

She sang the chorus sincerely.

FREDA :

I'm gonna turn my life around starting today
I'm gonna turn my life around starting today
Turn it up for a new wave
Gotta get it cause crime pays
I'm gonna turn my life around starting today
Yeah, yeah
