You woke to quiet, and the pale, barely visible light of dawn in your face. Something felt... off, but you didn't know what. You got out of the sleeping bag, careful not to wake Pancake, and pulled your shoes on quickly, stepping outside. Red Velvet was already out; he might've stayed awake all night. He turned around as soon as he heard you, and smiled.

"Morning."

You stretched. "Hhnnhhg.. Morning."

You sat next to him, and he gave up on trying to get a fire started, grabbing for his waterskin and picking it up with a frown.

"Empty. Yours probably is too..." he turned to you. "I'm going over to the river to refill these. You should.. probably eat something. There's still berries left if I remember correctly."

You dipped your head, a light smile on your face. "Stay safe out there."

He nodded, grabbing both waterskins and leaving. You rifled through your bag until you finally saw the food you'd gathered during fall. The cold was keeping it preserved nicely.

You ate, and realized Red Velvet had left a while ago, and should be back by now.....

There was sudden shouting. Loud shouting, at that. You stood.

Shouting of the volume and aggression you heard was never good.

Especially since you recognized both voices.

You froze. The way the second voice spoke...

It wasn't Red Velvet. He was the other voice.

This wasn't right. You froze, breathing quickly. Wasting no time, you turned back into the tent and shook Pancake awake. He looked up at you through squinted eyes.

"Hnn...hhhnmg?" He managed to get out. You shook your head.

"I know it's early, but you gotta get ready, okay? I need to deal with something real quick. You stay here. If you want, you can go over by the horsies. Okay?"

He nodded, pushing himself up with Chea at his side, and you ran out of the cave, dragging your sword out of the sheath and nearly tripping.

Red Velvet's voice had stopped before you were outside, and as soon as you turned the corner, you saw him running down the ravine. He nodded you back inside, and you went, falling into step next to him as he got to his tent. You got yours, talking to him.

"What happened?"

"We-have-to-go-!" He said between gasps. He finally caught his breath. "They're here. Almond and Madeleine are here."

You stared in pure horror. "What do you mean? How?! We left them in Water's Wake!"

"I don't know, Y/N. I don't know. They must have caught the night train."

He tossed his tent to you, and you stuffed it in the bag, throwing it over your shoulder. Chiffon jumped into Red Velvet's backpack, and you made sure Fructose was ready to go. Pancake looked confused and scared.

"What's going on?" He asked. You sighed.

"We have to go. Come on."

You helped him up into Fructose's saddle, and sat behind him, able to reach around and grab the reins. He looked back at you.

"Why? It's nice here."

"I.. I can't tell you right now. This might be scary, okay? If it gets too scary close your eyes."

He nodded, wide-eyed, and Red Velvet looked back at you.

"I bought us some time, but not much. We have to go. Now. There's an alternate exit that'll put us in the perfect spot."
