You closed your eyes, finally evening your breathing out fully. Opening them again, you stared into the fire; Red Velvet had decided to set up camp then and there since Fructose had run far enough from the river, and he was sitting next to you now, looking at you out of the corner of his eye. Chea and Chiffon had stayed out of the way the whole time; she must've felt like she couldn't do anything, and Chiffon just followed.

You sighed quietly, slouching. You'd promised. Pancake had been so scared. He thought he finally found safety. Someone to care for him again. And you'd given him up to protect yourself. You felt horrible. Horrible, selfish, guilty. All negative emotions you didn't want to go into. But how you felt didn't matter to you right now. Pancake was what mattered. What would happen to him? From the look in his eyes, Almond looked to be in no state to take care of a kid, and you weren't sure how Latte was doing. God, everything had fallen apart at your hands, hadn't it?

You took a deep, shaky breath, and Red Velvet put his hand on top of your hand, threading his fingers between yours.

"Try not to think about it too much." He whispered. You nodded, hanging your head and staring at the ground. But what else could you think about...?

You settled on the future.

What would you even do when you were out of the border? You'd never really put any thought into it. You could do so much. You could seek out another town and live there, or live alone somewhere in the unoccupied countryside. The latter sounded better. You'd had enough of towns and cities; both of the words left a sour taste in your mouth. You'd settle down in the country.

But what about Red Velvet?

He had nowhere to go. You knew exactly what you wanted, but what about him...?

"Red Velvet?" You murmured. He looked over at you.

"Hm?"

"What... what are you going to do when we're outside the border?"

"What do you mean by that?"

You sighed. "What are you going to do? Where are you going to go? I know exactly what I want to do, but I never asked you..." you shrunk into yourself a bit. A silence, only broken by the occasional crackle of fire, set a tension in the air. He didn't answer you for a bit.

"...I'm... I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do. I was..." his voice trailed off, and you knew he wanted to go on, but you didn't press. After a brief pause, you rubbed your eye with your other hand and hardened your expression into a solemn determination.

"I've been doing too much crying over the past few days. God, I just need to accept that this.. this is probably fate." You sighed, and Red Velvet tilted his head.

"Fate?"

"This was bound to happen sometime. The whole criminal thing. Ever since my dad divorced my mom I've had a.. mild distaste for following rules. I knew it would get me in trouble sooner or later. If I'm being honest, I'm glad I'm not alone. I'd go insane out here without someone. Thank you for sticking around, Red Velvet. Genuinely."

He smiled lightly, squeezing your hand. "You're welcome."

After a while, you hunched a little. You knew what you had wanted. Had. You'd previously wanted to leave Red Velvet behind at the border and part ways. Live your own life alone. And yet...
