ACCIDENTS

The next morning, bright and early, Captain Rogers is waiting at the lobby.

"Morning."

"Good morning." He says. "You ready to go?"

"Yup."

As ready as I can be, anyways.

"So what's the plan for today?" I ask.

"Well, in order to start building up your stamina, we're going to go for a run."

My shoulders slouch as he says it.

"Don't worry. We'll take it one step at a time, just do the best that you can."

That's not fair, everyone knows Captain America is faster than everyone else.

"Okay. I'll try my best."

"We better get going. There's someone waiting for us already."

"Oh?"

As we walk towards the park, I notice a guy sitting under a tree using his phone. Something tells me that he is the one waiting for us.

"Is that who I think it is?" I ask, turning to Steve while squinting my eyes to get a better view.

As we approach him, the guy stands up to greet us.

"I was starting to get worried." He says.

"Hello, I'm—"

"Sam Wilson." I interrupt, looking down when I realize what I just did.

"I...uh...it's a pleasure to meet you." I say. "I'm Vanessa."

"The pleasure is all mine." Sam smiles, and we shake hands.

"Are you ready?" Steve asks, Sam and I both nodding. "Don't forget to stretch." He reminds me.

As we warm up, Sam scoots closer to Steve.

"Hey Steve, you didn't say we had company." He whispers, but loud enough for me to hear it. "Not bad."

"Don't get any ideas Sam."

Shaking his head, Steve pats Sam's back. "See you at the end."

"Come on man, don't be like that." Sam says, but Steve already took off.

"Try to keep up." Sam teases. "Hey Cap! Wait up!"

"Not again!" Sam says, quickly running after him.

Boys. I think to myself with a shake of my head.

There is no way I can compete against Captain America and the Falcon, so I start jogging at my own pace, trying to focus on my breathing as I go.

"On your left." Steve says, speeding by while I'm barely completing half the lap.

By the end of the round, I rest my hands on my knees, already feeling exhausted, my lungs burning.

"On your left." He says again.

Come on. You can do this!

I tell myself, taking in a deep breath before I start running again.

Not even fifteen minutes later, I hear his footsteps rushing towards us at full speed.

If he says it one more time...

I didn't intend to compete but now I'm starting to get slightly annoyed, so I pick up my pace.

There is a brief gust of wind, and when I look around, I realize that Sam is no longer in front of me.
