Pedigree (Ray Shields x Rich! Prestigious! Reader)

A/N: Reader is in their early twenties (20-23).

No One's Pov:

The (L/n)'s were known all over the world for their skills and connections in the world of law. The large family consisted of defense attorneys and prosecutors alike. They prided themselves on their high educations and spotless records.

Never once had they used forged evidence or any other distasteful methods in court. This proved useful as they always had new cases that came without pause.

But now, (Y/n) (L/n), the youngest of the family, was finally going to make the biggest choice of her life.

Defense attorney or prosecutor?

...

Your Pov:

I sat at the dinner table with my parents and siblings. They were all excitedly awaiting my answer, but I wasn't even sure myself. My mother smiled, "I think being a defense attorney would be good for you. After all, your brothers are prosecutors. You'd be able to face each other in court."

I sighed, "I know mother, but..." Father huffed, "You need to decide so that we can find you a suitable husband." I finished my plate and stood, "I think I'm going to get some fresh air." I quickly left the room and went up to my bedroom. I sat on the bed, trying to collect my thoughts.

All my life I had been trained in the ways of both the defense attorney and prosecutor. My brothers married defense attorneys while my sister married a prosecutor chosen by our parents.

Most of the marriages in my family were arranged. And the couples always consisted of a prosecutor and a defense attorney. There were never any couples that were both prosecutors or defense attorneys. It was sort of an unspoken rule. That's why I was holding off on making a decision.

Because the sooner I made one, the sooner I'd be married.

I sighed and grabbed a coat from the closet, slipping it on before heading downstairs. My parents stopped me. My mother rose a brow, "Where are you going?" I sighed, "I'm going on a walk. I'll be back."

As I walked down the street, my mind began to wander. It wasn't until a while later that I realized where I was. I had walked all the way to the Edgeworth Law Offices. I sighed and walked inside, wincing as the little bell above the door rang.

A familiar voice reached my ears. "Welcome in. How can I-...(Y/n)?" I smiled at the man behind the desk. "Ray. How have you been?" Ray smiled. "I've been alright. What brings you down here, little lady?" I sighed. "It's nothing. I was just taking a walk and my feet took me here."

Ray grabbed my hand and led me to his private office, where we sat down. He spoke. "I heard from Miles recently. Every attorney is after your hand. The newest (L/n) to enter the world of law." I shook my head. "I haven't even decided if I want to be a defense attorney or a prosecutor, Ray. I don't want to marry for status or power." He hummed. "Well, the way I see it, the choice is ultimately...yours. And whether they like it or not, it always will be."

I looked out the window at the cloudy sky. "But they're my family. My education, my studies, I owe it all to them." Ray frowned. "Just because your blood runs through it doesn't mean you owe them a thing. All that studying and education didn't make you successful. You made yourself successful. You did that yourself. They just provided the tools."

I looked back at him. "But then, what about the marriage? If I become a defense attorney, then I have to marry a prosecutor and vice versa." Ray was quiet for a moment. Then, he reached into one of the desk drawers and pulled out a small box. He looked at me.

"(Y/n), I know that you told me when we first met that you wanted to be a defense attorney. I remember your eyes shining as the smile never left your face. You were beautiful then. And you're still beautiful now."

He opened the box.

He opened the box

He continued. "Even before I knew about your family and your reputation, I knew that I wanted to be with you. So what do you say? Do you want to be with me too?" I smiled, tears pricking my eyes.

"Oh, Ray, yes. Of course."

He slipped the ring onto my finger and intertwined our fingers, squeezing my hand. He smiled. "Thank you for saying yes. You're amazing, little lady."

I sighed. "Now we have to tell my family. Might as well get it over with now." I stood and Ray followed. He drove us back to my parents' house and as we approached the front door, I paused. Ray turned to me, smiling.

"How about a hug? For good luck."

I threw myself into his arms, relishing his warm touch. After a few seconds I pulled away and dragged him into the house. My mother greeted me in the foyer. "We've been looking all over for you dear...oh! Who is...this?" Ray took his hat off, bowing his head. "Raymond Shields ma'am. It's a pleasure to meet you." My mother hummed. "Yes...quite."

She turned to me. "Why don't you bring your guest to the living room? We have a lot to discuss." She turned and headed towards the living room, disappearing around the corner. Ray and I followed after her.

The rest of my family sat in the living room, talking amongst themselves, but once they saw Ray and I, they went silent. I sat in one of the armchairs and Ray stood next to me. My mother spoke. "Have you come to a decision?" I nodded. "Yes. I am going to be a defense attorney." My mother smiled. "Perfect! We'll have to arrange for you to meet some prosecutors so that you can find your husband."

I bit my lip. "Actually...I've already found one. Ray." Ray nodded. "Yes. Your daughter has accepted my proposal, ma'am." My mother rose a brow. "You're an attorney?" Ray nodded. "Yes ma'am. A defense attorney. I've worked under Gregory Edgeworth since I was 18. I now run the Edgeworth Law Offices."

My mother frowned. "(Y/n), you can't marry a defense attorney. The firm is respectable, but you need a prosecutor. Luckily, we managed to convince Miles Edgeworth to see you and-" Ray cut her off.

"With all due respect ma'am, I believe your daughter can make decisions for herself."

Everyone in the room froze. It was then that I did something crazy.

I stood up and grabbed Ray's hand before turning to my mother.

"I'm going to marry him whether you like it or not."

Then, I kissed him. He cupped my cheek, bringing me closer. After a few seconds, I pulled away from him. I turned to my mother.

"If you'll excuse us, we'll be going now."

With that, I pulled a daydreaming, lovestruck Ray out of the room.

Raymond Shields...He was the man I never knew I needed and...

I found him.
