I sat as my desk, filing through reports and filling out new ones. We had just done evidence transferral and had to file reports for each case file. This time, there was a lot to transfer and we went over the deadline by one day.
But the one who got the brunt of it was Detective Gumshoe. He had been sent to Mr. Edgeworth's office a few minutes ago. One of the other detectives looked at me. "Can you go see what's taking Gumshoe so long? We need all the help we can get." I nodded. "Sure. I'll be right back."
I put my report down and headed towards the elevator. I rode the elevator up to the floor with Mr. Edgeworth's office and walked down the hall. As I got to Mr. Edgeworth's office, I heard him and Gumshoe talking. Mr. Edgeworth huffed. "Please detective. Your endless meandering is what caused this mess in the first place. The other departs have to pick up your slack now."
He continued. "And you know what that means. Look forward to your next salary review." Without missing a beat, I entered the room. "Mr. Edgeworth!" The two paused and Gumshoe looked down in embarrassment. Mr. Edgeworth spoke. "Yes detective? What is it?"
I sighed. "It's cruel of you to treat Detective Gumshoe like this. What happened wasn't only his fault!" Mr. Edgeworth rose a brow. "Excuse me?" I continued. "Forensics took too long to give us reports on certain things and we couldn't file the cases until we got them. On top of that, Prosecutor Gavin misplaced a few of the files we needed. The only thing Gumshoe did was basically deliver the bad news."
Mr. Edgeworth hummed. "I see. Well, to make up for the loss of work, you two will be working overtime. I will have a word with forensics and Prosecutor Gavin. You're both excused." Gumshoe nodded. "Thank you, Mr. Edgeworth!"
The two of us left the room and Gumshoe spoke. "What were you thinking pal?! That was dangerous!" I shrugged. "I was just telling the truth. It wasn't really your fault. Mr. Edgeworth should know what 'Don't shoot the messenger' means." He chuckled. "Well still. At least he's not docking my salary any further since you did that."
I nodded. "Yeah, but you owe me one now. I don't risk my job for just anyone." He smiled. "I know, I know. I think that new pasta place just opened. I think I've saved up enough for two noodle plates and some drinks." I hummed. "That sounds amazing. How about tonight after we finish our overtime hours?" He grinned. "Sounds good to me, pal."
We took the elevator back down to the main floor. As the elevator door was about to open, I looked at him. "And maybe after dinner...we can go back to your place." I kissed his cheek and walked back to my desk, pretending not to notice the lovestruck expression on his face.
