The news of Mr. Berry's murder reached me before it even hit the news. Max had used his one phone call at the detention to call me and tell me everything. At the time, I wasn't even in the state, but I chartered a private jet and flew back anyways.
I met Phoenix at the detention center after I left the airport. I met Phoenix while I was in college. We attended a lot of the same classes and both wanted to be lawyers, so we naturally became friends.
I spoke. "Let me...let me take this case, Phoenix." He looked at me, concern in his eyes. "Are you sure? I know that this is-" I cut him off. "Yes, I'm sure. Please, Max is...a close friend of mine." Phoenix sighed. "Fine, but if you need anything or need help, please come to the office." I took a deep breath. "I will."
I turned and walked into the detention center. The guard took me to a visitation room and I was left to wait for Max. A few minutes later, Max entered the room. He sat down and immediately spoke. "(Y/n)! Darlin'! I'm so glad to see you! Are you taking my case?" I nodded. "Yes, I am. I know you didn't do it! You're lucky I wasn't touring this year."
He smiled. "Luckier than hog in a mud pit. But, I didn't do it! I was in the ringmaster's room right up until they found the body." I nodded. "I believe you, Max. Trust me. Us country folk have to stick together." Max smiled. "I remember when the whole family crowded around that tiny TV just to watch you sing. Your mama cried tears of joy that day, saying her baby was a big star."
I sighed. "Well, it's not just me. You're a star too. You're a big part of the circus and I'm going to get you back in the spotlight!"
...
During each investigation day and after every day of the trial, I would go to Phoenix and ask him about everything I could. He was a huge help.
But I also had to avoid the tabloids and paparazzi who were looking for their next big scoop. I hadn't announced this unexpected trip, so rumors were flying left and right without stopping. If they caught wind of Max, I would never hear the end of it from management.
I quickly entered the detention center and met Max in the visitation room. "I had to shake the paparazzi before coming here." He chuckled. "They're after you like a bear after honey. But you are just as sweet." I hummed. "You can't flirt with your attorney, Max. But maybe once you're out of here, we can figure out something."
He blushed a dark red. "D-Darlin'! Don't tease me! It's embarrassin'!" I giggled. "Sorry! Well anyway, tomorrow is our last day. You'll be declared innocent tomorrow!"
...
And I was right.
I threw myself into Max's arms on the steps of the courthouse. We had won the trial and he was free once again.
However, I had failed to realize that the paparazzi was snapping photos of us.
Max looked at me, a smirk on his face. "Why don't we give them something to really take pictures of, darlin'?" I blushed. "Wha-"
Then, with the flash of the cameras blinding my sight and the shouts of the paparazzi deafening my ears...
He kissed me.
