I sat in the vet office as I waited for Herman to finish his rounds with the other animals. Mr. Shipley had been killed and his death had thrown a wrench into everything. I jumped as someone rushed through the door. "Ms. (L/n)!" It was the orange-haired lawyer, Athena. I sighed. "Yes?" She spoke, worry filling her tone. "I-It's Orla! She's sinking in the tank!" I jumped up and grabbed our bag of surgical supplies before turning to her. "Go tell Dr. Crab. I have to get to the tank!"

She nodded and rushed away. I hurried over to the orca room and went inside. By the time I arrived, Herman was barking out orders to the others in the room. I approached him. "What's Orla's status?" He shook his head. "I'm not sure. But I think it's her stomach." We got Orla onto the ground and I handed the surgical tools off to Herman. I kept an eye on Orla's vitals as she was worked on. "She's at 39 bpm. Her pulse is slow."

Herman nodded. "I'm getting everything out now. Roll out the tarp." I quickly rolled it out and he dumped the contents of Orla's stomach. The fish and stomach fluid stained the tarp, but in the middle of the pile was a familiar pill. After Herman stitched up Orla, I read off her vitals again. "Her bpm rose to 60. And her pulse is strong. She'll recover."

Herman nodded. "Good." I whispered in his ear. "How did she get that pill? Did you try to eu-!" He cut me off, whispering back in my ear. "No. But I think it was stolen. Don't say anything to those lawyers about it." I nodded and started to pack up our tools as the lawyers spoke to Herman.

Once I was done, I quickly headed back to the lab. I cleaned and disinfected the tools before putting them away. I felt a soft peck on my leg and turned to see Rifle. I bent down to her height. "Hey Rifle. Sniper's with Herman. Are you hungry?" I picked up some fish treats from the feed bucket and held it out to her. She gently pecked them from my hand. Once she was done, I patted her head. She squeaked. "Peep! Peep peep!"

(This is literally how they gave the penguin dialogue, so don't judge me!)

I sat on the floor in front of her and she jumped into my lap. She softly bumped my chest with her head before settling. I sighed and wrapped my arms around her, hugging her like a stuffed animal. Rifle hated Herman but she loved me. She liked to be hugged and held only by me. And she treated my lap like a nest.

I looked up as Herman entered. He spoke. "Again? It's like you've made her into your emotional support animal." Rifle noticed him and jumped out of my lap. She started pecking at him and Sniper started squeaking from his hair. I huffed. "Rifle, Sniper, enough!" The two immediately fell silent. Sniper ducked back into Herman's hair. I looked at Rifle. "Why don't you go see Pearls? She's with Orla." Rifle squeaked and went on her way.

Herman spoke. "Thanks. Those two are always giving me a headache." I smiled. "No problem, but you're going to have to introduce Sniper to Rifle soon. Sniper needs to learn how to be a penguin." He sighed. "Don't remind me. I'd probably need you there." He continued. "You know...The way you care...It reminds me of Azura...and Ora." I paused. "...Yeah." I reached up and grasped my necklace. It had a picture of Azura, Ora, and I in it.

I swallowed the lump in my throat. "She loved Ora just as much as I did. My sister...she loved Ora with all her heart." Herman put a hand on my shoulder. "And she loved you just the same. I remember that day, you were the first to reach her after Ora brought her up. Your wails echoed in my ears." I remembered that day too well. Everyone witnessed my wails and cries as I collapsed.

Herman spoke. "That day, I promised Jack I'd keep you safe. He asked in Azura's place. And I don't think I've failed yet." I smiled. "You haven't. Thank you, Herman." He hummed. "I'm only carrying out Jack's wishes." I tilted my head. "It seems that Azura was right about you." He rose a brow. "About me?" I paused. "Yeah, I-" Before I could speak, Rifle returned, sparking another bout of chaos.

I smiled as I watched Herman try and calm her down.

I guess my feelings could wait.
