Cat Scratch Scars (Matt Engarde x Reader)

A/N: Pre Juan Corrida case!

Your Pov:

I stood in the kitchen, preparing lunch for Matt and I. He was in the living room playing with Shoe. We rescued Shoe when he was a kitten. He was abandoned in our trash can one night. Matt found him the next day and the two bonded. He bottle-fed Shoe and mothered him until he could take care of himself.

I bonded with Shoe later. I played with him a lot and got a cat tree for him. He loved to climb it and chase the laser pointer.

From my spot in the kitchen, I could see the laser pointer flickering around the room. I smiled and took the tray out of the oven.

Just then, a shriek came from the living room. I dropped the pan on the stove with a bang. I quickly went into the living room to see what had happened. Matt sat on the sofa, hunched over and holding the side of his face in his hands. Shoe sat on the sofa next to him, looking concerned. I kneeled in front of Matt. "What happened? Are you alright?"

He pulled his hand away from his face. "It hurts...Is it bad?" Thin, red, bleeding scratches marred the skin above and under his right eye. I bit my lip. "What happened?" He looked at Shoe. "I was playing with Shoe and he was chasing the laser. I, uh, accidentally aimed the laser at myself when I dropped it and Shoe scratched me."

I sighed. "It doesn't look too bad. Let's go get you cleaned up." I grabbed his hand and took him to the bathroom before getting the first aid kit out. I grabbed some alcohol wipes and Neosporin before turning back to him. "This is going to sting. Just try to hold still." I gently dabbed the cuts with the alcohol pad, hearing Matt hiss at the sensation.

Once it was clean, I put the Neosporin on the cuts and used a small clip to hold his fringe out of the way. "There. Once everything dries, you can take the clip off. And for now, no more using the laser pointer." Matt nodded. "Shoe likes to scratch, but we could just decl-" I cut him off. "We are not declawing Shoe. It's inhumane."

We sat down on the couch. Matt spoke. "Sorry, sorry. I know it's not an ideal solution." I laid my head on his shoulder. "It's alright. I'll just have to buy another heavy duty scratch post and scent it with catnip."

...

A month passed and unfortunately, the scratches didn't heal like we thought they would. They scarred, leaving a reminder of what Shoe did.

Matt's management had fit about the scars, saying that they would ruin his 'fresh like a spring breeze' image. So in public, his fringe had to cover that side of his face at all times.

But he didn't really care. He still loved and cared for Shoe. And Shoe loved him back.

We did agree to not use the laser pointer for a while and bought some feather toys along with some jingling mice.

He seemed to like them.

And the scars became just another memory. Another story we could look back on in the future.
