I sat on my knees in front of the warbaad statue. The wind blew gently and rippled the water. I looked to the right of the statue, locking eyes with the old priest, Tahrust Inmee. His spirit preferred to linger here to watch over his wife and newly born daughter.
We rarely spoke, but I knew that he appreciated the company. I stood and nodded to him before walking towards the stairs. I took a deep breath before starting the walk down to the plaza.
After I reached the plaza, I walked towards the palace. Nahyuta was waiting for me in the courtyard there. As I passed the palace gates, a wave of bad energy rolled over me. I leaned against the wall to steady myself and catch my breath. I had never felt such strong energy before.
If it was from a spirit, it wasn't a nice one.
Once I was alright, I continued on my way to the courtyard. I nodded to Rayfa and Queen Amara as I walked past. They both smiled back.
As I entered the courtyard, I spotted Nahyuta meditating. I stayed in the doorway, not wanting to interrupt him. He looked so calm and peaceful.
I collapsed against the wall, wincing as the energy from earlier returned. It felt suffocating, as if my lungs were in a vice. Nahyuta opened his eyes, quickly coming over to me, concern in his eyes. "What happened? Are you alright?" I looked at him. "I'm fine, Nahyuta. I just felt some bad energy."
He helped me up and led me to the grass by the pond, where we sat. Nahyuta started to speak to me, but I was too focused on the spirit fading in and out behind him.
Her royal robes were torn and her skin was dotted by blood. She wore no shoes and her makeup was gone. She was only looking at Nahyuta, then, she looked at me. She spoke, her regal voice cracking and breaking with each word.
"He...is...mine...!"
My chest felt tight and everything started to spin. Nahyuta gently grabbed my shoulders, but in my state, I shook as I tried to regain my confidence for my response. I shook my head.
"You are not welcome here! And he...he will never be yours to control again!"
Nahyuta shook me slightly. "(Y/n)! What's going on? What did you see!?" The shaking intensified until black spots began to invade my vision. Then, Nahyuta's voice faded from hearing as everything went dark.
...
I woke up in Nahyuta's chambers sometime later. The clock on the wall read 4:42. I sat up, but cried out in pain as I felt a sharp burning sensation. Footsteps approached the door and a few seconds later, it opened. Nahyuta stepped inside, his eyes filled with concern. "(Y/n), are you alright? You fainted in the courtyard..." I winced as the burning got worse. "My back...it's burning..."
He came to the side of the bed and placed a hand on my shoulder. "May I?" I nodded. He gently unzipped the back of my dress to my lower back and then he suddenly recoiled, a hand grasping at his prayer beads.
"Oh Holy Mother...!"
I spoke. "Nahyuta? What is it?" He helped me stand and took me to the vanity. With my back facing the mirror, I looked over my shoulder.
My back, from top to bottom, was covered in scratches and cuts. The skin for each one was raw and some were bleeding.
Nahyuta took me back to the bed. "I will fetch my mother. Try to rest." He turned and quickly left the room. I knew why this had happened, but I would have to cleanse the palace to keep it from happening again.
I had seen the spirit of the fraudulent ex-queen Ga'ran. For her crimes, she was put to death not long after her trial. Shortly after, she was buried in the corner of the courtyard, under a lone weeping willow tree.
Nahyuta's mother thought that it was right to choose that spot. The courtyard had no other weeping willow trees and despite being cast in shadows, the tree grew healthily. And according to her, the tree held some meaning.
"The willow tree encourages the expression of deep emotions, including grief and sadness through tears and teaching us the value and consequences of love and loss. Even through great loss, we have the ability to grow and there is potential for something new."
The tree was always off-putting to me, so I stayed away from it.
I was snapped out of my thoughts by Nahyuta entering the room with his mother. She immediately started to tend to my back. Nahyuta held my hand as warm water touched my back. Soon, they were bandaged and Nahyuta and I were left alone. He grabbed both of my hands. "Please tell me. What happened in the courtyard?"
I swallowed the lump in my throat. "I always knew that there were spirits who still roamed the palace, but I never thought that...she...would be one of them. And a malicious one on top of that." Nahyuta tilted his head. "She?" I sighed. "Ga'ran. She still wants to control you. Even in death, she still craves power and control."
I continued. "We need to contact the new high priest so that he can cleanse the palace as soon as possible. Her spirit needs to be removed before she causes any more harm." He nodded. "I see. I will send for him as soon as possible." I looked towards the window. "The other spirits here, the benevolent ones, they will stay. And there is one spirit that rarely leaves your side."
Nahyuta spoke. "Who?" I looked behind him, smiling as I regarded the spirit of Dhurke. I looked back at Nahyuta. "Dhurke. Your father still watches over you and the rest of your family." Nahyuta smiled. "I see. Knowing that he is still around...it brings me peace."
I squeezed his hand. "He is at peace as well. Trust me."
We both sat in silence, appreciating each other's presence. Just him and I, resting as we watched the sun set.
Hopefully, the new high priest would come soon.
