No One's Pov:
Rupert had been feeling listless for days. He knew that he needed money now more than ever, but he worried.
Where would he even start?
His wife, his dear (Y/n), was with child. She knew of his childhood and his background, but she loved him nonetheless. The news of the pregnancy took him by surprise, but he promised her that their child would want for nothing.
He would not let his wife or child live the way he did all those years ago.
That's why he got involved with Megundal.
He knew that stealing government secrets was treason and that he could be put to death for it, but he so desperately needed the money.
He needed to support his wife and unborn child...
...
(To your Pov)
I sat in the front room, looking out the window as I waited for Rupert to return. Dinner was waiting on the table for the two of us. My hands rested on my stomach, feeling the bump. I was 4 months along, yet it felt much longer than that.
The front door opened and Rupert entered. He hung his hat and coat before coming over to me. "How was your day, love?" I stood from the chair. "It was fine. The baby was kicking a lot today." He smiled. "I'm glad." I gestures towards the table. "Dinner's ready if you'd like to eat. I know you've been so busy recently."
He nodded. "Yes, but you don't need to worry about me. I can always cook my own meals. Stress isn't good for the baby."
We sat down and ate dinner. The silence was comfortable. Once we we're finished, I went to clean the dishes. Rupert gently grabbed my hand. "You go rest. I'll clean up in here." I headed upstairs and went into the bedroom. I changed into a nightgown and went over to the mirror in the corner.
My bump was showing more and more each day. Rupert was hoping for a boy, but boy or girl, I wouldn't mind. I jumped as Rupert appeared behind me in the reflection. He wrapped his arms around my waist and rested his hands on my stomach. "Your beauty always amazes me, love."
After that, the two of us went to bed. Rupert held me close, his warmth lulling me to sleep.
...
I found myself waiting up late into the night for Rupert to come home. He left after dinner, telling me he had a meeting to attend to. I was starting to worry, however. He never stayed out this late.
As I stood from the rocking chair, the front door slammed open. Rupert stumbled in, collapsing to his knees. His right hand gripped at his left arm as blood seeped into his sleeve. I rushed over and helped him up, shutting the door as I did so. "Rupert, what happened!?"
He only shook his head. "I-It's nothing. Help me to our room..." He winced with every step. Once in the room, I sat him on the bed and grabbed the first aid supplies, a bowl of water, and a cloth. I helped him shrug off his jacket, waistcoat, and shirt.
The wound on his arm was clearly a bullet wound. Blood trailed down his skin. I looked at him. "How did you get shot?" He winced at the pain. "Please, love, just help me. I'll explain everything later." I hesitated. "...Alright."
I started cleaning the wound carefully. Once the bleeding stopped, I applied the salve and bandaged the wound. "There. Be careful with it." He kissed my forehead. "Thank you, love." I looked at him. "You need to be more careful. Our baby needs their father."
He ran a hand carefully through my hair. "I'll try. Everything I do is for you and our child."
He never explained what happened that night. But the bandages always reminded me. If they weren't changed frequently, the blood would deep through onto Rupert's sleeve.
And to add to the confusion of the situation, tucked away in his coat was a music box disc. When he found out I'd seen the disc, he told me that I could tell no one about it. I didn't understand at the time, but I promised not to tell.
But now, seeing him behind the bars of a dark prison cell, I wish that I did.
I stood on the opposite side of the bars, trying to gather my thoughts. "...You're not a bad person, Rupert. I know you're not. So why? Why do this?!" He looked at me, pale blue eyes softening. "My father, Megundal, all of it...I did it for our family. I didn't want you or our child to live the life I did. I wanted to ensure that I'd be able to comfortably support the both of you."
I rested a hand on my stomach. "Rupert...We don't need money. We never did. As long as I had you and our child, I'd be happy. But now, you're stuck here. I was able to stop them from giving you the death penalty, but I can't bring a child into this place. What am I to do, Rupert?!"
His fingers curled around the bars of the cell as he bowed his head. "I won't ask you to bring our child into this. But..." He looked up at me. "Please raise them as well as you can. Teach them to embrace all the things this world has to offer. For me." He paused, then continued. "I have 10 years to serve in this place. I want you to forget about me and about all of this."
I spoke. "But-" He cut me off. "Not forever, love. When these ten years end, you'll see me again. I promise." I took his hand in mine, tears pricking my eyes. "Fine...you promised. I love you, Rupert." He squeezed my hand. "And I love you, (Y/n)."
...
I endured the remainder of my pregnancy without Rupert, but I tried to remain happy. I was able to claim support from the government and it paid enough.
I saved up enough money and 1 month before my due date, I opened a bakery. And with Rupert still fresh in my mind, I gave the bakery a name.
Milverton Dairy Bakery
The place became popular quite quickly. Even the aristocracy bought from the bakery. Things were looking up it seemed.
And on a cold day in November, I gave birth to a healthy baby boy I affectionately named (name) Chrogray. He was a splitting image of his father, but he had my eyes. And this brought me comfort.
For I knew that it wouldn't be long before Rupert would come home.
