When I'm Gone (Gregory Edgeworth x Pregnant! Reader)

A/N: DL-6 warning!

Your Pov:

I sat in the gallery with my son, watching as my husband and his assistant faced off against the terrible prosecutor Manfred Von Karma. Miles was excited to watch his father's trial. It was his dream to follow in his father's footsteps.

The trial continued on, both sides fighting harshly. But soon enough, the trial ended on a somber note. The judge handed down his verdict.

'Guilty'

Gregory and Raymond bowed their heads as they left the courtroom. I turned to my son. "Miles, why don't you go see your father? I'll join you soon." He nodded. "Yes, mother." I watched him go with a smile. Once he was out of sight, I sighed.

I could tell that Gregory was taking this hard.

I stood and left the gallery, heading into the lobby. Miles and Gregory were nowhere in sight, but Raymond had waited for me. "Mrs. Edgeworth! Mr. Edgeworth and Miles just left for the elevator. Do you need me to help you downstairs?" I smiled. "If you could, Raymond."

We started down the stairs, our footsteps echoing off the walls. As we reached the platform in between the staircases, the entire building began to shake. Raymond pulled me to the corner of the platform and helped me sit down. "It's an earthquake!" In that moment, I could only hope that my son and husband were safe. We gripped the railings of the stairs as we waited out the quake. Once it was over, we stood again.

Nothing was said as we made it to the door at the bottom of the stairs. Just then, a gunshot echoed in our ears. A scream pierced the air, then there was silence. But that wasn't the end of it. A final gunshot sounded before it fell silent again. Raymond and I looked at each other before exiting the stairwell and going into the hallway.

The elevator was open, its light reflecting off the tile. I could see several shadows slumped inside. The thought of my husband or son being injured immediately made me panic. I quickly rushed over to the open elevator, the scene in front of me being forever burned into my mind.

I would never forget it. Ever.

One of the bailiffs, Yanni Yogi, laid on the floor of the elevator, seemingly unconscious. His gun was on the floor a few feet away, but the bullet hole on the glass of the elevator door made it clear to me what had happened.

My son laid against the wall on the opposite side. He seemed uninjured and the rise and fall of his chest reassured me that he was alright. Then my gaze fell to my husband. I heard Raymond gasp from behind me.

I collapsed to my knees, the most heartbreaking scream ripping itself from my throat.

(Skip to 1:51 for the scream!)

Gregory laid against the wall that was parallel to where Miles was. Blood stained his mouth and clothes. A bullet wound stood out on his chest as blood dripped from it. I choked on my sobs as I reached out to touch him, to make sure that he was still alive.

But Raymond gently grabbed me, pulling me away. I struggled against him. "N-No! L-Let me...Gregory!" Raymond spoke. "Mrs. Edgeworth! Please...I've called the police. They're on their way." He sat me in a nearby chair and went back to the elevator. I sobbed into my hands, the scene from earlier refusing to leave my mind.

The police arrived a few minutes later and removed the bailiff and Miles from the elevator before taking them to the hospital. One of the officers walked out of the elevator and came over to me. "Mrs. Edgeworth..." I looked at him. "Y-Yes? My husband..." The officer shook his head. "We couldn't save him. I'm sorry. But your son is waiting for you outside in the ambulance."

I slowly stood, ignoring the tears cascading down my cheeks. "Thank you, officer." I quickly left the courthouse and was escorted to the ambulance. Miles was still unconscious, but they reassured me that he would be alright.

Once at the hospital, they put Miles in a private room before performing an ultrasound on me. They wanted to make sure that the baby was alright after the significant stress I had endured. Luckily, everything was fine.

When I entered Miles' room, Raymond was inside. He turned to me. "I'm so sorry. If I had went with him-" I shook my head. "No, Raymond. Don't apologize. It wasn't your fault." I sat in the chair next to Miles. "We're all grieving right now. But please, I don't want you to feel bad." Raymond nodded. "Ok. I think...I think I'm going to go h-home..." As he walked out, I saw the tears staining his cheeks.

I sighed and grabbed Miles's hand, waiting for him to wake up. However, I dreaded telling him what had happened.

He had lost his father. His hero.

And I...I had lost my husband. The father of my children. The love of my life.

He was gone. Forever.
