Bloody Nose

I sang along to the music, drumming my hands on my steering wheel while I leaned forwards to see the gap in the pine trees better. I'd been driving for almost three hours with all my things in the back to move to college. I cant say I wasn't nervous, so I'd been blasting pop music the entire way to keep my spirits up. I pulled into the clearing between the trees and parked in the gas station.

It seemed pretty empty so I took a moment to belt the rest of the song whilst I took off my seatbelt, singing to the Taylor Swift song as if there were a mic in my hand;

"and I LIKE SHINY THINGS BUT I'D MARRY YOUU WITH-" I stopped suddenly when I made eye contact with some guy I hadn't seen, who was stood with his arms full of a bunch of food he'd just gotten from the gas station. I impulsively looked away, before looking back to see if he was still watching me, and he was, with a grin on his face.

I coughed and looked away, getting out the car and slamming the door behind me as if nothing had happened. Hopefully I could just ignore him.

"Hey! I love that song!" I heard him call over as I started filling my car up with gas.

I ignored it, I could tell he was making fun of me. When I next glanced up he was talking to some girl and laughing about something. I breathed a sigh of relief now that the attention was off of me.

I took a deep breath before walking into the gas station to pay. I looked out and watched the two strangers get into the car, wondering If they had been laughing at me. I watched the guy put his seatbelt and felt a weird feeling in my gut. I just couldn't tear my eyes away from him.

"I said that'll be twenty-three dollars.."
The cashier waved a hand infront of my face, "Helloo?" bringing my attention back to her.

"Huh? OH, I'm sorry.." I said awkwardly, taking out my card to pay. When I looked back out the gas station window, only my own car was there.

I parked and got out the car, grabbing my bags from my trunk and slamming it closed. Having a car was so convenient, I felt annoyed that this was a rental I'd have to return tomorrow, but there was no other good way to move when you didn't have anyone to drive you. Oh well, one day I was sure I'd be able to afford my own. I stopped to look around as I tied up my hair into a ponytail to try and keep myself cool. Everyone was hugging their loved ones and giving emotional goodbyes to their parents, and I didn't hesitate to just go and find my room so I didn't have to see all that stuff.

I pulled my suitcase into my flat building and walked up to the main door to the stairs, double checking the numbers on my keys. Right as I was about to open the door someone did the same from the other side, and the door opened with a lot of force and hit me in the nose.

"Hey, watch it!" I exclaimed, putting my hand to my nose. I heard a shocked laugh from whoever was on the other side, and I looked up to see a guy with dirty blonde hair, who was starting to apologise - completely insincerely - between his laughter.

"I'm sorry- I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-" He said, and I suddenly recognised him as the guy who'd been staring at me at the gas station.

I mentally freaked out for a second and didn't want him to recognise me back, so I just said "It's fine!" whilst looking down and pushing past him. I noticed a drop of blood hit my shoe, and realised I was having a nosebleed.

With one hand clasping my nose, I hauled my suitcase up the last steps, checking my key again to read the room number. Flat 2C. I looked ahead down the hallway and dragged my stuff along with me to the door, wiping the sweat off my forehead when I got there and thanking god that the nosebleed was fairly contained.

I unlocked my door and went into my new room for the first time, dropping my suitcase. I went into the attached bathroom to clean my face and find some paper towels to stuff up my nose. Breathing out a sigh, I flopped down onto my new bed and stared up at the ceiling, exhausted from the long journey.
