"Aaand action!" Olivia shouted, and I watched her clap her hands awkwardly through the camera lense as a substitute for the clapperboard. Since I slept in we were the last group in class to start our filming and hadn't managed to get every part of the equipment.
"I just don't think it's safe for you to go there without me!" I zoomed the camera on Weston as he delivered that line, before turning it to Kalynn to catch her response.
"What, because I'm a girl you think I can't take care of myself?"
I turned the camera back to Weston. "Emma you KNOW that isn't what I m-" He stopped his line and looked right at me suddenly. "Anais can you stop moving the camera so much, just film ONE of us and then we'll reshoot the scene from the other angle and i'll put it together."
Olivia threw her hands up, "Weston that was good! Can we just get this scene done already?" Olivia was the other girl living in our flat, who was so introverted I hadn't even met her until it had been three days of living there. She was a gorgeous lanky Korean girl who seemed so put together and stressed all at once. "It's almost sunset and we need this scene in daylight."
"Yeah," Sam chimed in from next to me, "This is BEFORE they leave for the trip and it needs to have a bright tone to contrast with the fear the audience is gonna suddenly feel when-"
"I know. Let's just start again filming only Kalynn, trust me." Weston Interrupted, and we started the scene over.
"I just don't think it's safe for you to go there without me!" It's true, the day really was dragging at this point. We'd had to walk pretty far to get to where we were shooting this project too, out by the woods.
"What, since I'm a girl you think I can't take care of myself?" Tension between all of us had already been rising a lot, mostly because the day had such a bad start after I slept in and messed up the schedule.
"Because." I cut in. Weston looked at me blankly and asked "What?"
"Because I'm a girl, not since I'm a girl" I said, waving the script in my hand.
"Give me a freaking break Anais it's the same thing!" Weston practically yelled at me.
"Dude I wasn't even talking to you it was Kalynn's line!" I replied instantly, feeling frustrated with him. "Can you seriously just chill out?"
"Guys why don't we just take five-" Kalynn added, and Olivia sat down with her head in her hands.
"Maybe," Weston started, walking up to me, "you'd understand that it actually DOES concern me, since I am in this class, and on this team too, Anais!"
"Sam and Olivia actually worked on this script, so let's just keep it true to how it's written- and like, why on earth would I not be allowed to correct a wrong line?" I replied.
Kalynn and Sam started talking amongst themselves as everyone other than me and Weston started clearing everything away.
"I don't know, what makes you think you have authority over this, you slept half the day like you don't even care about this film!" He accused, "If you're gonna be dead weight then this film is gonna suck!"
"I'm not dead weight! Don't call me dead weight!" I ordered him, feeling the tips of my ears turn red. I noticed suddenly everyone had seemed to clear off and it was just us two.
"Whatever man, I'm going home." Weston announced, picking up his backpack and slinging it over his shoulder as he walked away.
I felt my cheeks burning red, and I tried to swallow my pride but seeing him walk away made me speak before I could think. "OH well I'm SO sorry i'm not as organised and down to earth as you, you short fuck!"
He stopped and turned in his tracks, letting out a dry laugh. "Are you actually kidding me with that insult?" He walked over to me quickly, right up to my face, taking me off guard and making me take a step back, drawing breath in quickly. "You are like actually half my height, what are you 5-foot-nothing? YOU'RE calling ME short right now?" He dramatically waved his hand over my head height to underneath his chin.
"No! 5 foot .... 2." I said defensively, but my voice came out quieter than I wanted it to and seemed to trail off along with all the nerve i'd built up.
I had to look up to make eye contact with him now that he was so close, and he looked down to meet my gaze.
As soon as he did I guess my change in feeling was obvious because he frowned and stepped back quickly, taking a deep breath and looking to the side even though there wasn't anything there to look at.
"Uh," he started, shoving his hands in his jeans pockets and avoiding looking at me "..Well anyways I don't-"
"Guys!" Olivia appeared, her hands full with cables, her copy of the script and the camera which she was struggling to hold. "Any help with this stuff or are you still fighting like little kids?"
"Let's go." Weston said calmly, grabbing half the stuff from her arms. I picked up my copy of the script and jogged to catch up with Weston and Olivia as they caught up with Sam and Kalynn.
"Weston why are you blushing?" Kalynn instantly blurted out the second she saw him.
"Die." He told her, pushing her by the arm. I looked away.
Olivia walked beside me, fiddling with a button on her shirt. "You okay?" She asked me.
"Yeah I'm good." I told her. "We can get more done tomorrow and I'll set an alarm this time."
