I woke up - my body hanging half off of my bed - to the sound of the song I'd set as my alarm blaring out of my phone.
I blinked, covering my eyes from the sunlight that had filtered through the blinds onto my face. I sat up, rubbing my eyes and pulling myself out of bed one leg at a time and practically stumbling to the bathroom to brush my teeth. Through the grogginess of waking up, the memory of last night came to me. Oh my god. Weston had kissed me. Really kissed me, and meant it. Butterflies erupted through my stomach.
I looked at my phone, swearing when I saw the time, and rushed to brush my teeth and get ready, putting on a skirt my favourite top, a comfy sweater and my worn out sneakers. It was just starting to warm up into spring now, and I was so happy to see the sun again and not need to wear my thickest jeans everyday. I rushed putting on suncream and didn't have time to bother with makeup before I left.
I rushed the walk to class, feeling half awake still as I pushed open the door to my classroom. The teacher stopped talking for a moment, shooting me a look as I came in and sat down next to Sam. Sam glanced at me, smiling and raising his eyebrows, before returning his attention back to the teacher.
"So, as I was saying," our teacher continued. "I hope you've all enjoyed your Christmas break, and are all ready to start working regularly again..." He paced around the room. "You should already be thinking about this term's assignment, to make a short music video to a song of your choice. I'll be paying close attention to composition, thematic substance and pacing when grading these... Pacing especially. A lot of you struggled with that for the last project."
I took some notes as he talked, taking a second to glance around the class to look for Weston. Sure enough, he was there, sitting next to Olivia near the back of class, next to the window. He looked focused, his eyebrows furrowed and his head down, writing frantically in his notebook. I smiled to myself and turned back to my own work.
Sam and I talked a little throughout class, when the teacher wasn't paying any attention.
"My birthday's coming up pretty soon, I wanna do something big for it." He told me. "As in a weekend away or something, what do you think?"
"That sounds good," I nodded. "Any idea what kind of thing? Where you'd want to go?"
"Well," he stretched. "Weston has his car here this term, I might force him to take us all out to go camping somewhere or other."
"That's a nice idea, maybe by the beach? Or we could always just go down to the lake."
"The lake is a classic. I sort of want a road trip though.""Did you guys say a road trip?" Kalynn butted into our conversation from the table behind. "I've been saying we need to do one for forever."
"You've literally never mentioned that before." Sam replied, flatly.
They started light heartedly fake-arguing and my mind drifted. I turned my head to look at Weston, who caught my eye then. He beamed, waving at me from across the room."Alright class, please get into your groups and start discussing the project, think about how you're going to organise your time, here." Our teacher instructed, and everyone in class got up and starting shuffling around to other tables.
I followed Sam and Kalynn to the back, pulling chairs up around the table where Olivia and Weston sat. I sat next to Weston, and he glanced from his fidgeting hands to meet my gaze. "Morning." He said to just me.
"Good morning, Wes." I grinned."Road trip. My birthday. Weston's driving. Shoot the video. Boom." Sam stated.
"Sounds great, where'd you want to go?" Olivia asked, tilting her head. Her jet black hair was piled up into space buns today.
"People keep asking that, why can't we just drive? It's about the journey, not the destination." Sam replied in a bad fake stoner voice.
"Of course I'll drive, thanks for asking." Weston replied sarcastically.
