The Carnival

"I think Isabelle and I are dating!" Olivia gushed, "Like, we haven't labelled it but any day now! We hang out all the time and she's so sweet to me..." She touched her dark hair as she talked, staring off into space.

"You guys are so cute together." Sam assured her. "You're definitely girlfriends."

The three of us had just left class, and were walking down to the bus stop to get it across town to meet the others at the carnival.

"I can't believe it's so dark already," I said, looking around- really just wanting to change the subject away from Isabelle. "I thought i'd have time to go and get changed before we went.." I adjusted my jacket, looking down at my sundress and sneakers.

"You look great," Olivia assured me as we all got to the bus stop, she took my hair out of it's ponytail without even asking, and fluffed it up. "There you go! no need to change anything now, you look pretty!". I smiled at her.

There were some fireflies circling around the streetlight which stood over what was barely a bus stop, and more just a wooden sign sticking up to indicate that it was one. "I wonder what this carnival is gonna be like.." Sam said, "I hope they have like actual rides, and it's not tiny."

"Eh, we'll see," Olivia replied, kicking the dirt up a little into the evening air with her purple sneakers. "It'll be fun either way just to hang out with you guys!"

I heard someone call over, and we all looked to see Kalynn and Weston walking towards us from across the street.

My heart jumped out of my chest when I saw him. He was wearing a dark green button down shirt, undone at the top, converse and some perfectly fitting straight leg trousers with his hair all messed up. Our eyes caught straight away and he grinned and waved and I looked away so he wouldn't see that my cheeks were flushed.

"Hey!" Kalynn said to everyone. "The bus is meant to be here any moment now.. so..."

As everyone started talking about whether we were gonna have to pay to get in or not, I noticed Isabelle come over, her hair curled tightly, a bounce in her step. She was wearing a little pink dress. "Hi guys!" She squealed, her and Olivia hugging straight away. Olivia was taller than her, the height difference would be adorable if only Isabelle hadn't cheated.

The bus pulled up right as she got there, and everyone budged past each-other to get on. I got on after most people, to see that most of the tightly set seats on the little bus were already almost full, lots of people heading to the carnival I guess.

I sat down, and as soon as I did I saw Weston had been walking down the aisle behind me. I moved over so he could sit next to me.

"Jesus, take up some more room why don't you!" I said, pushing him lightly so I was less pressed against the side of the bus. "You're gonna compress me to death or something."

"What'd you say?" He asked me over the busy talking in the bus, looking over.

"I said, can you-" He cut off my response by dramatically yawning and stretching to take up more room, pushing his hand in my face as he did. I pushed his hand away, saying "Dude, fuck off, that's so not funny!", but laughing a little.

"What's not funny?" He asked, pushing his legs over where mine were. "This is just how much room I take up, Anais. You gotta accept my authentic self, man!"

Isabelle, who was sitting infront of us, turned around and leaned her arm on the back of the seat, so she was facing us. "Don't you guys get along?" She asked. "Why are you arguing?"

"Don't worry." Weston dismissed her, as he started to dig around in his bag for something. "It's not serious."

The bus ride was only around twenty minutes. The sun had almost set as we started to get there. Weston and I mostly just half-sarcastically annoyed each-other and talked about pointless stuff most of the way there.
