my body crashed down on the other side, suffocating the soft green grass beneath me. i groaned, slowly sitting up and rubbing my now aching back.
"fuckin.g fence." i muttered, standing up. i glanced around the yard, little crumpled up pieces of note book paper were scattered everywhere. i bent down, picking one up by my feet and unfolding it carefully.
six weeks since you've been away. . .
i flipped the small page over, seeing nothing else was writtten. i read over six small words carefully, assuming they were song lyrics and stuffing the paper in my back pocket. beer bottles still littered the yard from when i last saw over this isolated place.
i walked towards the front steps, a bead of sweat starting to fall from my forehead. i wiped it away quickly as i reached the beaten up door.
knock, we dare you
i knocked.
no one answered.
i knocked again.
the door creaked open.
i pushed the broken down door open a little further, going as slow as possible in fear it might just fall over.
"hello?" i called out. i know it was stupid because i've watched so many horror movies and that's basically why all the main characters died.
when no one answered i stepped into the house, closing the door behind me and making my way down the hall. i entered the living room, which was surprisingly clean along with the kitchen. in fact,
the entire place was spotless.
i went down another hallway to my left. a door was at the end of the hallway and as much as it was a bad idea, i walked towards it. my hand settled on the handle, pushing it down slowly and swinging the door open.
"i swear to god if you put a ladder to that fen- oh."
i stood frozen, seeing michael turned around in a pair of spider-man boxer briefs.
i bought those.
"i- i'll wait outside." i said, turning around and going to the front door. i stepped out on to the front porch.
a couple minutes later michael joined me. he stood in front of me wearing black skinny jeans and a loose white tank top.
"hi." i spoke barely above a whisper. my eyes were focused on my shoes making patterns in the dust laying on the unswept porch.
"hi."
i brought myself to look up. his weirdly yet cute pink-ish hair all over the place, the black eyebrow peircing i never knew he got, and finally, his lips.
his soft, plump pink lips that haven't been on mine for far too long.
i stepped forward. he didn't move a single muscle as my hands cupped his cheeks. my thumbs ran over the pale skin slowly.
"i've missed you." i breathed, watching him sink into my touch.
when michael didn't reply, i let my hands fall to my sides.
"but you don't miss me, do you?"
he didn't say anything.
i took a deep breath and closed my eyes, running a hand through my hair and peeking a glance at michael. his lips were parted, fumbling over his words.
"michael." i said, snapping my fingers in front of his face.
he didn't move.
"michael!" i snapped again.
"i love you."
oh.
"y-you what?" i asked, wanting to hear the sentence escape from his lips once more. i watched as he mouthed the words.
i - love - you
he looked down at my shoe that had stopped it's movement in the dust. i didn't know what to say. should i tell him i love him back?
i stood in an unbearable silence until finally, he spoke up.
"i really do, luke. i love you so much and i couldn't live with my self when i hit you. i hated myself for telling you to leave and god, i know my apologies will never mak-"
"i love you too." i stopped him, tears starting to slip down my cheeks.
"why didn't you come back?" michael whispered, his voice full of pain. "i needed you so much."
my body went numb, my heart hit rock bottom, and the next thing i did was press my lips firmly against the pink haired body in front of me.
my hands cupped his cheeks again as i pulled away slightly, my eyes closed as our foreheads were pressed together. his breath fanned my lips and i gave them a small peck.
"i kept calling but you wouldn't answer." he breathed, my thumb wiping the tear that had slipped. "y- you lied to lily and moved to new jersey without telling anyone."
"i know i'm sorr-"
"tell me how many years."
i pulled away, my hands still cupping michael's cheeks. "tell me how many years you left."
"t-two." i said quietly.
i felt michael starting to shake and i pulled him into my arms, bringing him down to the dusty porch. his hands grabbed a fistful of my shirt as he sobbed. and i'm not lying when i say i sobbed too.
"you left me for t- two years. y- you didn't even s- say goodbye." michael's voice had gone cold and suddenly i was being pushed back.
"you left me! i moved here to get away yet here you are as my fuckîng neighbor! do you have any idea how much shit you've put me through?!
it took me a year and a half to forget you!" he screamed.i got up, shoving michael back. "i'm sorry okay? i didn't ask to be built back up again over and over again, i didn't ask to run away and if anything i wanted to come back. i'm sorry i didn't build back up the way you wanted when you broke me is that what you want to hear!?" i asked, tears staining my cheeks.
michael went silent.
"get out."
"what?" i asked, seeing him point to the fence.
"i said leave!"
instead of leaving, i grabbed his wrists and tugged him towards me, pulling him into a hug. his fists were starting to slam on to my chest begging for me to let go but i didn't.
"i'll see you tomorrow michael, and i'm sorry you never got the goodbye you wanted but i hope this makes up for it."
i pushed him away and started walking down the front steps. my struggled to pull myself back over the fence felt like shit and soon enough, my ass was aching from landing so hard on the pavement.
i entered my own house, glancing one last time at the fence before shutting the door. out of everything that was said, only one thing stuck with me.
it took me a year and a half to forget you
