I Love You

I have never said those three words that are so important.

When I was little my parents would tell me and I would respond with ditto.

But Lily. Oh Lily, makes my heart jump when she is near me. She makes me smile like a fool. When we kiss I feel like I am flying. When we are apart I feel like my organs have knitted themselves into a tight knot.

We fight a lot.

But we smile a lot too.

She lays in the hospital bed unconscious just like every other day I have come. I take her hand in mine.

I whisper, "I know this isn't the right time. Or the right place. But I really need to get this out. I love you. I love you so much that I can't get over you. I love the way you cover your mouth when you laugh or when your cheeks glow red when you get embarrassed. I could go on for hours. Anyway I love you."

She looks the same as she did before. I stare at her fingers and hold it. Suddenly she squeezes it.

She mutters, "I ... love you ... too..."
