Chapter 7: Green (2)

Gary Oak was a sore loser.

He strived for the perfect victory.

Be it sports, games and most importantly, pokemon battles.

Never settling for less.

A true perfectionist.

All to obtain that same glory as his grandfather in his younger days.

But Ash Ketchum was an obstacle in his path.

During their starter selection, he had already calculated the best pokemon to pick second.

Thus, gaining an edge against his rival from the very start.

Letting Blue pick first was natural.

He factored in even his fondness for the chestnut-haired girl into his equations.

Not that he would ever admit it to anyone.

Viridian Forest served as his turning point.

There, he encountered a Pokémon that would change his life forever.

A Ratatta.

Faster than anything he had ever witnessed.

This excited the orange-haired boy.

For the first time in his life, he found a worthy challenge.

The battle was fierce.

His Eevee and Squirtle giving their all.

The purple rat was like a missile.

Landing [Quick Attacks] at his opponents with quick succession and precision.

It glanced at the young boy.

His emerald-green eyes conveyed everything.

Gary Oak was relishing in the battle.

A sentiment his pokemon shared as well.

A sentiment it shared too.

And finally, the ridiculously fast Ratatta acknowledged the boy.

His Trainer.

A worthy human.

Gary was in a PokéCenter in Pewter City.

After obtaining his first Badge, he and his pokemon were having a well deserved rest and meal.

Observing his Pokémon was something he liked doing.

From that, he was able to see their behaviours and quirks.

Which was why he was surprised to see Eevee sharing her food with Ratatta.

Eevee was Gary's first Pokémon, a gift from his grandfather's cousin.

Needless to say, the boy knew everything about her, including her personality.

She was a picky little thing and yet, there she was, sharing her food with Ratatta.

This prompted him to remember his grandfather's words.

'There's nothing quite like the moment when you realize two living things have learned to trust each other thanks to you' Gary recalled his grandfather's words.

'Kinda thought it was obvious back then.'

'Red and I are humans and yet, we got along like oil and water.'

'So yeah, seeing different species of pokemon being friends is definitely cool.'

As he finished his thoughts, the boy could not help but smile.

'It's a such a small thing but… it's not bad.' He finalized.

Gary was now at Cerulean City catching up with Blue in a restaurant.

Apparently, she amazed him since had already defeated the Cerulean Gym Leader.

She was now ahead of both him and Ash.

Although by every account, Gary should have been frustrated at falling behind.

But the frustration never came.

Instead, the orange-haired boy was elated and congratulated her.

"I thought you would be mad at me for going ahead or something," Blue remarked, surprised at his behaviour.

"Nah, I'm happy that its you," Gary smiled with staring at her deep blue eyes.

Although eliciting a blush from the girl, she could not help but be proud of her achievement.

After all, the smartest boy she knew was praising her.

"If it was Red, I would have pulled my hair out though," Gary joked, triggering a giggle from Blue.

It was his favourite expression to see.

Bringing her along for his Gym battle against Misty was a pleasant surprise for the orange-haired boy.

He discovered that although the battle itself was not much of challenge, having someone cheer for you was comforting.

It made his battle somewhat enjoyable.

Soon after receiving his own Cascade Badge, Blue and Gary decided to spend their remaining time together.

And they loved every second of it.

Blue decided to head to the next city while Gary hung back to wait for Ash.

Clearly to rub it in his rival's face.

A few days later, Gary found the raven-haired boy training on the 'Nugget Bridge'.

After his short bout with his rival, he was disappointed at Ash's performance.

When they returned to the PokéCenter, Ash recounted what had happened in Mt. Moon.

Gary already knew that his friend was a reckless do-gooder and wanted to scold him for poking his nose into trouble.

But he could not do that.

Not after recalling the image of Ratatta and Eevee smiling together.

That made him upset and angry at this 'Team Rocket' fellows Ash talked about.

Instead, albeit in his own arrogant way, Gary gave his rival some advice.

'Well, I am in a good mood right now,' Gary thought, reminiscing at his time with Blue a few days ago.

Ash thought about it before thanking him.

Oil and water.

"Yeah, I'll definitely win next time," Ash said with a toothy grin.

Chapter 7: Green (2)

With that, the orange-haired boy left Cerulean City.
