so go easy, on me

Evie woke up on a Saturday morning to the smell of cooking coming from the kitchen. A smile instantly lit up her face, her brother must've gotten up and started making breakfast. The pair had fallen asleep on the couch the previous night and now he was no longer there.

She stretched, pulling the blanket off of her, seeing she was still wearing her pullover hoodie and leggings from yesterday. A yawn escaped her as she stood up and made her way to kitchen, a frown etched onto her face when she heard laughter.

Turning the corner, she saw Zack in the kitchen, but he wasn't cooking and he wasn't alone. Mr Bell was there, also wearing a hoodie like the twins.

"Morning sleepy." Zack chuckled, catching sight of his sister. Evie looked at the clock to see it was half 10.

Mr Bell turned around too and greeted her with a big smile. "Morning I-"

"I'm not hungry." Evie mumbled, her eyes filling with tears before she ran upstairs.

"Evie!" Zack called, about to run after his sister before his teacher stopped him.

"I'll go mate, you eat that." He said, putting a plate in front of the teenager. Zack sighed, watching him slowly follow up after his sister, giving her a couple of minutes alone.

Mr Bell had only been upstairs in the Lopez house a couple of times and every time it was to wake the twins up when they wouldn't answer the door or his calls. He made his way towards Evie's room, hearing her cries.

The young girl was curled up against the wall, sobbing into her knees, a picture of her and her mum sat on the dresser above her.

Mr Bell sighed, crouching down beside her, he remembered seeing Zack in the exact same position in his office not too long ago.

"Come here." He whispered, pulling her to his chest. Evie instantly clutched onto his hoodie as she cried, initially thinking it was her brother. But she realised the arms that held her felt bigger and stronger, she hadn't had many hugs like this recently from a grown up, she received a lot from Mrs Paracha, Miss Keane and other teachers when she lost her mum, this only made her cry harder.

"You're alright, you're alright." Mr Bell sighed, stroking her hair, tears filling his own eyes. He cared a lot about these two and seeing them upset hurt him.

It wasn't long before Evie had cried herself to sleep, her teacher sadly looked down at her before placing her in her bed and draping a blanket over her.
