Elora skipped school the next day. She said she wanted to stay with me. The boys had left the previous night because I forced them to.

I felt so empty inside knowing I was down beat so bad I couldn't even save myself from the monster. I stirred awake and I looked around me.

"Good afternoon." Kelsie said, standing by the bed. "Fuck."

"What the fuck happened?" She asked.

"Elora will explain." "I asked. "She's...not that clear."

"He accused me of stealing his money. Then he hit me in front of Liam. And Caleb heard us. And they both fought him. But Elora smashed a bottle over his head and he collapsed."

"Holy fuck." I nodded. "Are you okay?" "No. I got two broken bones and a dislocated spine. And my body is full of black blotches. Of course I'm not okay, Kel. Fuck this."

Elora climbed on my bed and she frowned at me.

"You know how fucking difficult it is? All I want to do is bust my ass to give El a good future and my pussy ass can't even protect myself! Fuck this."

"Cora. You're being ridiculous. You're stronger than you think you are. Even El would agree. You can't do that. She looks up to you."

I looked at Elora and she stared at me with so much weight in her eyes.

"Kid, I'm doing my best. Please don't be mad at me if I fail you." She shook her head and placed her little hand on my leg. "No, Cora. You are the best sister in the world. I will never be mad."

I smiled at her.

"Are the boys okay?" I asked. "They're okay. They went to school for football practise of course. I can't believe Caleb and Liam would do that. I thought they hated you." "Same."

I closed my eyes and I leaned back.

"Where's dad?" I asked.

"He's downstairs. He's getting stitches as well. But..."

"He's not getting arrested."

"The HOD is the only way."

"I tried. They kiss his ass. He's powerful. He gets his job done. They fear if they lose him, it's over for them. Unless I go for child services and then they separate me and El? No thanks."

"Move in with me."

"No. I can't."

"Until this dies down. Please."

"What if he comes and kills you and your family?" "I sleep with a knife, bitch." I chuckled. "Fine."

"Good. Now eat something. You look malnourished." "Thanks." "Of course, bone." I rolled my eyes and ate the awful disgusting hospital food. But hey, food is food.

Kelsie sat beside me and she took my hand. "My boss is so hot." "We've been through this." "It's casual. And I like casual." "Does he?" "He wants more."

"I knew it." I smirked.

"What do I do?"

"Jeez man, if you like him, date him. And if you don't, just tell him it'll be a booty call shit or something." "I know. I'm so tired." I rolled my eyes.

"Listen, how about this? While your asshole of a dad is still here, I'll go to your house grab you guys stuff? Is that okay?" "Sounds great. Won't Mrs. Davis mind?"

"Suck my dick she loves you guys." "Cool." I uttered, smiling. She got up and winked. "See you later, gals. Love you!" She blew a kiss and she disappeared.

"I'm sorry kid." I said, looking at El. "Please don't say sorry. You've said that like a million times this week and it's not even Wednesday." I laughed and she did too.

"You're so young to witness this. You don't deserve it."

"Cora you were my age and it was worse for you. It's okay." I looked at her and I smiled. "It shouldn't be anything to you."

She crawled beside me and gently tapped my nose. "Let's just wait for the day we spread our wings to fly."

I smiled at her and nodded. "Sounds good to me."

The door opened and my two greatest frenemies entered the room. "Here they finally are. My big bullies." I grinned.

Caleb and Liam smiled at me and stood by my bed on each side. "How are you?" Caleb asked.

"Still the same. Except my princess over here makes it all better." I glanced over at El who was blushing. Caleb lifted her up and smiled at her.

"Hey, kiddo. You stayed here all day?" He asked.

"I didn't wanna leave Cora alone!"

"Of course not. She needs you more than ever." Yes I do. She's my life. She giggled and pushed his hair to the side.

"Did daddy do that to you?" She asked, staring at the bruise on the side of his face.

"He did. But I'm stronger than him. Look, I'm still standing right. But you know what? You're stronger than all of us. You took down that giant monster all by yourself."

I smiled as they both talked to each other.

She giggled again and nodded. "I'm stronger than all of you!!" She screamed. "You are." I said, almost in a whisper.

Caleb set her down on the floor and she ran around the room. I looked at both of them and I cleared my throat.

"Guys, thank you for being there last night. You saved my life."

"Well, now we know what you're dealing with, we're gonna watch over you now." Liam said. I smiled. "Thank you."

"Listen, I know we have a project due, but since you're getting out today, if you have the strength we can do it." Liam said.

"Dude, cut her some slack she almost fucking died."

"I know i-"

"It's fine. I'll be at Kelsie's place. It'll be safer for Elora if she's there too. That asshole won't dare invade." "Alright. I'll drop you off at her place." Liam said.

"We four can go. Gotta look around." Caleb said. "Sounds good."

El ran to Liam and tugged his pants. "Hey, hey."

Liam looked down at the little firecracker and he grinned. He picked her up and looked at her.

"I'm Liam. That's Caleb." He said.

"Liam? Can you take me outside? There is a vending machine. I really want a candy bar."

He looked at me for permission. "One Snickers bar. That's it."

"Got it. Come on, little El. Let's spoil you." They left the room and I chuckled, feeling my heart flutter.

Caleb patted my hand and smiled at me. "You're safe now." He said. I looked at him for a second to see his ocean eyes and I glanced away.

"I'm safe when he dies, Caleb Wilson. That's all it is." I uttered.

He dragged a chair beside me and he stared at me.

"I saw what he did to you. That's fucked up. No one should ever go through that. Now that we know, I'm gonna look out for you."

"Why?"

"We may not be close in school or talk a lot. But I know you need my help. So I'll be there even if you say you don't need it."

"I don't need it." "I know." He smirked and leaned back on the chair, staring at me.

I stared back at him and I sighed. "I just want a better life for her."

"If she has it, you will too. But it starts with you."

"That's all it is. A road that I have to pave with bare hands."

I smiled and looked away.

"Let's just hope it isn't a dead end."
