Present Time
I pulled into the lot of the school and I waited for Elora to come out. I leaned back on my seat and I tapped my forefinger gently on my thigh.
"What are you thinking about?" Caleb asked.
"Elora didn't even mention the new paint job." I uttered. He chuckled and slapped his thigh.
"I can bring it up for you." I clicked my tongue and looked away. "No. Forget it." I sighed.
He placed his hand on my thigh and I sucked in a little air.
"Baby, don't do that. You know how I get." I turned to him. He smirked. "I know." I took his hand and I placed it on his lap.
I leaned my head on the steering wheel and I sighed.
"You're miserable." He uttered. "I know. I'm tired. I feel like I haven't slept for 20 years. If it's so, I'd believe it."
"Well, now after Helga clears your name we can sleep as much as we want." He said. I smiled. "We'll have work." I groaned and rubbed my eyes.
"How about I drive, sweetheart?" He asked.
"No. I'm not giving you the car. Again." "Why not?" "I'm afraid you might scratch it."
"I drove for 2 years and you're not letting me drive back to the apartment. It's like 5 miles away."
"Caleb..." I looked at him and I frowned.
"What's going on?" He asked, furrowing his brows.
"Nothing. I'm just tired. I'm thinking after this whole ordeal it's gonna be over. We're gonna go back to being free and talking about free will. We'll live in a house or some shit. Get jobs."
I sighed.
"You're having second thoughts?"
"Maybe. But then again I wanna just live freely. My actions are justified. But there's no-one who can see that." I stared at the school.
"What are you saying?"
"I don't know. I'm speaking shit right now. All that matters to me at this very moment is...you and Elora, you're finally safe." I frowned and I looked at him.
He smiled at me and rubbed my head. "You're our saviour, Cora. We love you for that and for many other things." I nodded.
"What about the mission of killing your special someone?" I asked.
"Don't worry. Lucky for us, he's going to Oklahoma for a few days. We can get him there. Cool?"
"Cool." I smirked. He cupped my cheeks and kissed me softly. "You don't have to worry anymore. You're going to be free, Coco. That's all that matters now."
I nodded and hugged him tight.
The bell rang and Elora rushed out first. I laughed. "She's a runner. She's a little cheetah." I uttered. Her fingers trailed on my car and she opened the back seat.
"So? Any news?" She asked.
"No. I just picked up Helga and dropped her at the courthouse. You wanna get some ice cream to pass the time?" I asked.
"Sure!" She leaned back on the seat and I pulled away from the lot. We drove to a little ice cream truck and got ourselves ice cream. She had her minty chocolate flavour, I stuck to strawberry and Caleb went original with vanilla.
We basked in the afternoon sun, watching it disappear slowly behind the hills.
Elora leaned to the front and she looked at me.
