I woke up from my nap and I looked outside. It was dark out and I had to eat something. My tummy rumbled like thunder and I groaned in irritation.
I walked to the kitchen and I grabbed a few snacks the boys had got me. I rummaged through the cabinets that Caleb had so neatly arranged and I pulled out a tube of Pringles.
I grinned and sat by the kitchen counter, munching on the snack. There was a knock on the door and I groaned. I wasn't really gonna walk all the way there.
"Come in!" I yelled.
The door opened and the firecracker ran inside the house. She aimed for me and almost knocked me off my feet.
"Woah!" I found my footing and I held on to the countertop before falling back. She wrapped her wonderful arms around me and she giggled.
"I missed you so much!" She said.
"I missed you too, kid." I looked at the doorway and I saw Nina smiling at me. "Nina, what are you doing here?" I asked.
"Wanted to check on you. I know you've been staying alone and those boys have been back and forth. I brought you something." She placed the casserole on the table and she smiled at me.
"How are you?" She asked.
"I'm okay, just taking my time to heal, Nina."
She smiled and walked towards me. She cupped my cheeks and kissed my head. "Elora wanted to come see you so I thought I'd drop by and give you something."
"You're too kind. I'm glad you came by. I wanted some company anyway." I smirked. She chuckled and sat down.
"Can I go up and play with my dolls?" El asked. "Sure. Don't make a mess. You know I can't clean it." "Okay."
She ran up the stairs and I looked at Nina.
"I know the look on your face, Nina. What is it?"
She stared at me with no emotion and then suddenly had a frown on her face. "You still need to give your statement, mi amore. They don't know what really happened."
"I know. I can't talk to them face to face. I'll find a lawyer. There's a good chance they won't let me go, Nina."
"What happened?"
"I killed a boy." "What?" She asked, her expression horrified, but I stayed calm. I think I was used to it. Being feared. And it didn't matter anymore.
"It was an accident, Nina. My father had pitched me into the ring in the pit. It was either him or me. My dad threatened me that if I didn't win, Elora might suffer the same consequences. So I had to. But my only intention was to make him unconscious. Not kill him."
"What is this...pit?" She asked.
I stared at her and realised I hadn't shared this with anyone except Caleb. I pursed my lips and sighed.
"Dad took me to the warehouse where I fought for money."
"What?" I smiled softly and explained everything to her.
"I only wanted to protect Elora. The events that followed were unplanned. I had to. Or he'd kill her."
She stared at me with tears in her eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me?" "It is not your burden to carry. It's no one else's. But since I may be in trouble I have to share my story to justify my actions. But I know they won't let me go, Nina."
She was speechless. She turned away and stared into the void of space, thinking of possible words to ease the situation.
"Nina." I uttered. She turned to me with worry in her face.
