Tim's booming voice filled the room as he grabbed my shoulders, his eyes wide in shock. "Holy shit. Davina?"
I couldn't help but smile, even though my heart raced from the near slip of my real name. I forced a soft laugh, pushing down the storm of emotions rising in my chest. "Hi, I'm Antonia," I corrected gently, watching as confusion flickered in his gaze.
"I will be back in 5 mins " Alex said as he walked away to somewhere in hurry .Tim blinked a few times, clearly trying to process what I had just said. It was like watching gears turn in slow motion, and I could almost feel his brain cells scrambling for answers. Before he could respond, I saw Charlie's eyes glaze over slightly, and I knew he was being mindlinked again, probably trying to keep Tim in check.
Tim, however, was anything but checked. "Wait, wait, wait." He held up a hand dramatically, as if pausing the world. "Are you absolutely sure you don't have a long-lost twin sister? Maybe one you misplaced somewhere?" He looked so serious, the furrow in his brow deepening as he turned to Charlie as if seeking validation.
I sighed, already knowing where this was headed. "No, Tim. No lost twin sister," I replied, my voice carrying the weight of exhaustion. This was the fifth time he'd asked me since we'd crossed paths.
Tim wasn't ready to let it go. "What about reincarnation? You know, like those cheesy movies where—"
I cut him off with a look, and Charlie smirked behind him. Tim's creativity was amusing, if not completely ridiculous, but his persistence only made me more nervous. They all knew something was off, and if anyone figured out the truth...
The room went silent as Alex entered, his presence commanding as usual. Instantly, the atmosphere shifted, everyone snapping to attention. My stomach knotted as his gaze flickered between us, unreadable as ever. No one made me feel more exposed than Alexander.
"I'll show you your rooms," he said, his voice firm but cool, as if we were strangers.
I followed him, my lips pressed together in a tight line, trying to control the swirl of feelings threatening to overtake me. As we moved up the stairs, my mind raced, searching for cracks in my carefully built walls. We passed his room, and I could feel the heat of his presence even though we weren't touching. There was something about him—something that drew me in, no matter how much I fought it.
He stopped in front of a room adjacent to his. "You can stay here. Make yourself at home. As for your... friend," his tone shifted slightly, "there's an empty room in another section of the house."
I barely had time to think before he turned to walk away, not even giving me the chance to argue.
"Wait, isn't that a bit far?" I called after him, my voice sharper than I intended. He paused, turning slowly, his expression unreadable. I felt like I was walking a tightrope with him, and one wrong move would send everything crashing down.
"There's only one other bedroom in this wing, but it's taken," he said, his words deliberate. "Unless, of course, you're thinking of sharing your room with him," he added with a smirk. "But I'd advise against that—there's a child in this house, and I'd prefer some restraint."
His remark hung in the air, and despite myself, a small smile tugged at my lips when he mentioned Ethan. The thought of the little boy always made my heart ache with longing and guilt. Alex tilted his head, clearly noticing my reaction.
"What? Do you love children?" he asked, curiosity lacing his voice.
I shook my head internally, the truth heavy on my tongue. No. I don't. Except for Ethan. But instead, I smiled at him, the mask of Antonia firmly in place. "Yes, aren't they just lovely?"
He nodded once, his expression softening for just a moment before he turned and walked away toward his room, leaving me alone in the silence.
Alexander's POV
"Alpha, are you sure it's her?" Charlie's voice broke the stillness, pulling me from the storm inside my head.
I clenched my jaw, the tension radiating through every fiber of my body. It's her. It has to be. Even my wolf was sure of it—this was Davina, my only mate , the woman i love . And yet... why was she lying? Why didn't I feel the bond when I touched her? It was like a cruel joke from the gods, leaving me questioning everything.
"Yes," I said, my voice low and edged with frustration. "No two wolves carry the same scent, Charlie. You all know that."
Before anyone could respond, a knock at the door interrupted the conversation.
"Come in," I snapped, barely containing my agitation.
Sam, one of my royal guards, stepped in, holding a file. "Alpha, these are the new patrol plans and the list of warriors. We've increased security, and soldiers will be on the lookout for any rogue activity."
I took the file, scanning it briefly, though my mind was elsewhere. Rogue attacks had been happening more frequently, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something much worse was coming.
"Good," I said, dismissing her with a wave of my hand.
Once the door closed behind her, I turned to Charlie and Tim. "I need every detail about this vampire, Austin. And Davina claimed to be from a small town to the east—find out the truth. I know she's lying, but I need proof."
Charlie nodded, understanding the weight of the command. "Yes, Alpha."
"And Tim," I continued, my voice dropping with seriousness, "I want you to protect her. Stay close, but keep a distance. Place a few guards around her, but make sure no one gets too close. No harm is to come to her."
Tim gave me a playful salute, but I could see the worry in his eyes. He was always the joker, but even he knew this was no time for games.
"What about the 'night' matter and the vampire?" I asked, my mind still on the possibility that Austin wasn't who he claimed to be.
Tim shook his head. "Nothing concrete yet, Alpha. But we're still digging."
Charlie chimed in, his tone thoughtful. "Do you think Austin is the same guy from that night? They have a similar build."
I exhaled sharply, the pieces of the puzzle swirling in my mind. "I've considered it," I admitted. "But if he's involved with Night, why would he be protecting Davina?"
The room fell silent again, the tension thick between us. Every step I took felt like it brought me closer to answers I wasn't ready for, but I couldn't afford to hesitate.
"Keep investigating," I ordered. "And be discreet. We can't accuse anyone without proof."
Charlie nodded, but before they could leave, he asked, "Sir, about Ethan—?"
"He's on a school trip," I replied quickly. "He'll be back by the weekend. We need to settle this before then."
As they exited, my wolf's voice echoed in my mind. "Do you think the mate bond was broken by a witch? Or maybe we've been forced to believe it's broken when it really isn't?"
I leaned back in my chair, rubbing my temples as the weight of it all pressed down on me. What if my wolf was right? Could it be possible that something darker was at play here?
"I don't know," I muttered, running a hand through my hair in frustration. The uncertainty was suffocating, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't shake the feeling that everything was about to unravel .
