_______________
Noa tried to peer ahead, craning his neck to see the front of the line. There were so many people, a sea of bodies shifting restlessly as they waited. Some looked like ordinary Japanese citizens, dressed in casual clothes that blended seamlessly with the city streets he had walked earlier.
Others, though, seemed to be in incognito mode, their faces obscured by masks and dark sunglasses. Their attire, heavy and concealing, seemed ill-suited for the warmth of the evening.
Aren't they hot in that? Noa mused, feeling the heat prickle at the back of his neck. He could barely stand the mild warmth himself. How could they tolerate it in those layers?
Beside him, Chris tapped his foot impatiently. His eyes darting around, scanning their surroundings. Snuffy in contrast, seemed unnervingly calm though his gaze was sharp. There was a feeling in the air an unspoken understanding that they were in unfamiliar territory, both figuratively and literally.
Suddenly, the line surged forward moving with a speed that caught them all off guard. They were at the front before they realized it. A woman sat at a makeshift table her face obscured by a mask that revealed only her eyes.
"Tickets, please?" she asked, her voice soft yet firm. The words were clear to Noa, thanks to the translator device he wore in his ear.
Worry flickered in Noa's chest as he fumbled for a response. He had no ticket nor no reason to be here beyond a vague, foreboding text message. "I don't have a ticket," he confessed, his voice low uncertain if she'd understand.
The masked woman's eyes narrowed in confusion as if she would burst in fury.
Before he could try again, a voice cut through the tension, smooth and commanding. "Don't worry about him, darling. He's with me."
Noa's heart froze as he turned toward the voice. It was her. Hildegard Reichert, his sister-in-law. She moved with a grace that belied the subtle menace in her presence, her eyes locking onto his with an intensity that made him uneasy.
Why does she always look at me like that?
She gestured for him to follow and Noa, still thrown off from her sudden appearance obeyed without hesitation. Chris and Snuffy moved to follow as well, but she stopped them with a curt motion.
"No, just Noa." Her tone was final, leaving no room for argument. She glanced at them her gaze dismissive, almost bored.
Chris and Snuffy exchanged a look, a silent conversation passing between them. They both shrugged accepting the situation for now. They stepped back, but Snuffy's eyes lingered on Noa filled with a quiet warning.
