The dull clang of the cells echoed through the small sterile room, leaving them alone in the oppressive silence. There was no cot for them to sleep on, making resting torturous.
Despite everything Michael had convinced the officers to let them stay in the same cell. They sat on opposite sides of the hard floor at first, eyes locked but neither saying a word.
After what felt like an eternity, Michael broke the silence. He slid across the floor, taking Y/n's hands into his. He turned to face her fully, his blue eyes softening as they held hers.
"We've been through a lot, haven't we?" His voice was low, but steady.
Y/n nodded, her fingers tightening around his. She could see the storm of emotions flickering behind his gaze, the vulnerability he was slowly revealing. "Yeah, with the others and the fire..."
Michael's lips curled into a faint, almost bittersweet smile. "No...not everything that happened. I'm taking about us."
Her eyebrows lifted . They had been in shambles. What even were they anymore?
Dating? Exes?
Friends?
Trapped partners?
Situationship?
The affection was still there. She sighed to herself. These might be their last days and she didn't want to leave the earth without understanding what they had.
"We had something beautiful," Michael said, his thumb tracing the back of her hand. "I want to have that again, but I want to make it better this time."
"I want to be loved and I want to love you back, unconditionally."
Y/n smiled back at him, her heart warming at the affection in his voice. Despite the cold bars around them, being here with him made it feel just a little less harsh.
Then, Michael's face grew more serious. He swallowed hard his grip on her hands tightening. "I need to be honest with you, Y/n." She could tell he was about to drop a bomb of information.
"I've been secretive, I know. I'm done with that. The real reason I broke up with you, I'll answer it now."
Y/n's breath hitched slightly, her eyes searching his. The moment of truth came, she braced herself for whatever truth he was about to reveal.
Michael took a deep breath, looking down at their joined hands before speaking again. "You might of figured out...about Vespera... When she was pretending to be the head nurse, she used another nurse to lure me into the office. They gave me these gummies... I'm sure they had drugs in them because the next thing I remember, I woke up naked." His voice cracked slightly, every muscle tightening with the memory.
