_______________

The silence of the room was broken only by the faint labored breaths of the girl lying on the cold hard floor. The coolness against her skin was the only comfort she had. Vespera was now a broken trembling shadow of herself waiting for the end she knew was inevitable.

Peace was shattered by the sound of footsteps echoing ominously through the empty space. Vespera's heart skipped a beat, her blood running cold as she recognized the rhythm of those steps. The measured deliberate pace belonged to someone she knew all too well.

Her mother.

Hildegard

From the shadows, the woman emerged her presence commanding and cold. There was no warmth in her eyes as she looked down at the broken figure of her daughter.

"Vespera," she called out, her voice devoid of any tenderness.

Vespera tried to move or to respond, but her body refused to obey. The pain that racked her form was too much, her limbs felt like lead while her voice barely a whisper.

"Mommy," she croaked out, her throat filled with desperation.

Her mother approached her with slow deliberate steps. Without a word, she reached down and grabbed Vespera by the hair yanking her violently onto her back. The sudden movement sent a shockwave of pain through Vespera's body and she shrieked in agony.

"Mommy, what are you doing?" Vespera's voice was laced with fear tears slipping out of her eyes as she looked up.

Vespera tried to lift her head. "Mommy..." her voice a light feather. "Mommy, please..."

Her hands instinctively reached up to grasp at her mother's wrist, but she was too weak to fight back.

"What are you doing?" Vespera whimpered, tears streaming down her face. "Why are you doing this?"

Her mother's expression was stagnant. "You've ruined everything and been nothing but a liability."

"Now it's time to replace you."

"No!" Vespera cried out. "No, please, Mommy! I didn't mean to- I'll fix it, I promise! Just give me another chance!"

Her mother's grip tightened and she shook Vespera violently. "Do you think this is a game, Vespera? Do you think you can just apologize and make everything better? You've jeopardized everything I've worked for!"
