A New Beginning

Tris POV
I woke up in the Erudite infirmary. I heard Kate's voice. I looked around. I saw Tobias sitting next to me. I put my hand on his. He looked up at me. His face lit up.

"What happened? Are you okay?" Tobias asked

"I'm fine. I followed what he said and the lights go brighter and brighter. It ripped the tracker out of my arm and as it died, it cause a small wave of force and it slammed me against the wall." I explained

Kate walked over to me.

"Is everything alright?" She asked

I sat up slowly.

"Yeah. I'm fine. Just a little shock I guess." I said. "Can I go home?"

"Yeah." Kate said

Tobias helped me off the bed. We walked out of Erudite. I felt a sudden urge to run. I started running while laughing. Tobias started running behind me. We ran to Dauntless. I jumped off the ledge into the Pit. Someone started clapping. I looked toward the sound of the clapping. Max emerged from the shadows. I grabbed the gun out of my jacket.

"Hey, take it easy." Max said. "Put the gun down."

"I don't take orders from you." I said

"I said put the gun down." Max said

"I said I don't take orders from you." I said

"Put the gun down Tris." Tobias whispered. "Just put it down."

I felt tears well up in my eyes. Tobias wasn't on my side anymore. I had no one. I shot Max in the chest, dropped the gun and ran. I ran out of Dauntless. I went to Amity. Joanna greeted me when she saw me.

"Is Robert here?" I asked

"Yes. I can get him. I'll tell him to meet you in the dinning hall." She said

I went to the dinning hall. I sat at a table. I remembered when we were here not long ago. Caleb, Four, Peter, and I were here with the Abnegation refugees. Tears came to my eyes. I heard a voice behind me.

"Beatrice?" Robert said

I looked back at him. He sat next to me.

"I missed you Beatrice. How have you been? Where's Caleb? Back at Erudite?" Robert asked

"That's what I came to talk about." I said trying to hold the tears back

"Oh my, Beatrice, what happened?"

"Caleb died. He was shot." I said as the tears spilled over

Robert hugged me.

"I'm so sorry Beatrice. I hope it was for a good reason."

"He died protecting me. Everyone dies because of me and I can't deal with it anymore." I said

Robert put his hand on mine.

"You'll make it through this Beatrice. He's watching over you. Look, I would love to stay longer but I have to get back to the fields. If you need anything, just come and talk to me okay?" Robert said before leaving

I sat there for a minute after he left, letting the tears flow into my cheeks. Then I stood, dried my tears and walked back to Dauntless. When I was back to Dauntless, I walked to the Pit ledge and sat down. Tobias walked up behind me and sat down next to me.

"Where did you go?" He asked calmly

"Amity." I said. "I wanted to tell Caleb's best friend when we were kids that he had died."

Tobias said nothing. Tears came to my eyes. I wiped the tears off my cheeks. Tobias pulled me closer to him. He stood and helped me up. We walked to the dinning hall. We sat next to Zeke and Uriah. I didn't say a word.

"So, I heard Max died. They are considering Four as leader." Zeke said

"I'm not taking it." Tobias said

"Why not?" Uriah asked

"I don't want it." Tobias said

"It's either you or Tris." Zeke said. "Everyone wants a number one spot leader."

I looked up at Tobias.

"They kicked him as leader. He's factionless. You won't see him." I whispered to Tobias

He looked at me puzzled.

"What? When did this happen?" Tobias asked

"Yesterday." I whispered

"Tris, are you taking leadership?" Uriah asked

If I took leadership,they would think that I killed him to be leader.

"How did Max die?" I asked

"A gunshot wound to the heart. It was a Dauntless gun with multiple sets of fingerprints on it." Zeke said

"I'll think about it." I said

I finished eating and went to my apartment. Tobias came into the apartment shortly after I did.

"I can't take leadership." I said. "They'll think I killed Max for leadership."

"I know. That's why I'm taking it. The announcement is tomorrow. You will be co leader. No one will know. I promise." Tobias said

I hugged him.

"Thank you." I whispered

I pulled away from him, took off my jacket and went to bed. Right as I was falling asleep, I felt a pair of strong arms wrap around my waist. I smiled and fell asleep.
