"Isn't she a beauty?" Abbs says, fawning over the tree.

"She?" I ask, slightly confused as to why she has gendered the tree.

"Can't you see the feminine curves that her branches form?" she asks me as if that's the most obvious thing in the world.

"Of course," I say.

"Liar," she counters, rolling her eyes as she speaks. She walks over to our two Christmas boxes. My tree decorations are pretty basic and she's hanging those first.

"Did you make this?" I ask taking what seems to be a two glossy pieces of paper braided together to form a heart. It looks cool but I've never seen a decoration like this before.

"Yes," she says. "I was taught how by my art teacher. She's from Denmark and they are very popular there. She said directly translated they'd be called Christmas hearts."

"They're cool," I say admiring the red and white one in my hands.

"Thanks, then you should definitely look in this box," she says and hands me a smaller box. I open it to reveal many more Christmas hearts in different colours but some aren't just braided, they have a figure in the middle, either a candle or a reindeer.

"I didn't know you could DIY like this. We should definitely film a video showing how to make these!"

"Calm down, love," she says. "They're regular ones are not even that complicated to make. Now, help me hang them."

"Even better, then I'll be able to learn. Promise me? In the name of the Christmas spirit?"

She hesitates for a beat, still not too thrilled about being in main channel videos.

"I promise," she says with a content smile. That didn't take much convincing, she's really becoming more and more confident. "Now put down the camera and give a hand."

I put down the camera on a counter for a wide shot. A nice silence settles over us while we finish up the last of the tree decorations. Now, only one thing is missing.

"Just one piece left, guys," I say and pick up my camera.

"The star," Abbs says and holds it up to the camera. "Nate, can you get me a chair?"

"We won't need a chair," I say confidently.

"Honey, I can't reach without one. I don't even think you could without falling into the tree," she says, slightly confused.

"No, I mean I'll lift you up."

"We'll fall face first into the tree and knock it over," Abbs says, not having much belief in my lifting abilities and coordination.

"No, we won't," I assure her. "Here you take the camera and I'll take you."

Before she can utter more protests, I stick the camera in her hand and lift her up holding on just below her bum.

I can hear her mutter "crazy" under her breath.

"Get it in shot, please, love," I say as I lean my back against the tree so she's facing it.

"Done!" she exclaims. "Now, please put me down."

I do as I'm told and we both step back to take a look at our finished work. It's not the most colour-coordinated tree, nor does it seem to have a theme. It's a mix of homemade stuff, cheap basic baubles and a few fancy items from our parents. To an outsider, it might seem like a bit of a mess but I love it. And I can feel that Abbs agree with me.
