Back in the very beginning, of this book when we saw Joey running out of the business building to see his dad at the Brown Hospital, Emily is just leaving her job at the Brown Hospital, getting a ride from her boyfriend.
Roy: so how's work? (Starting up the car)
Emily: a pain in the butt as usual.
Roy: John gave you a hard time today?
Emily: nah, a lot of people came in today- half of their body ripe apart, ugh, too much to explain!
Roy: (turning out onto the street) don't worry once we get home, you can go right back to sleep! I won't even bother you! (Smiling)
Emily: liar!
Roy: me! When did I ever lied?
Emily: when you brought me a car for my birthday but it turn out to be a fake!
Roy: damn! I should do that again!
Emily: har har.
Roy: ah, I hate these Michigan's road! You see yellow cones and all they do is fill up the cracks! Half a mile closed! For nothing!
Emily: just like my friend's husband says, 'Michigan has five season, Summer, Spring, Winter, Fall and Road work!'
Roy: (laughing) who said that?
Emily: Nancy's husband, Jones.
Roy: oh yeah, I remember him, I made fun of him because his first names is a typical name to be a last name.
Emily: yeah, that the one, he also runs the J-Mart.
Roy: heh, maybe I get me a job there.
Emily: yeah maybe.
Roy: you don't think I- (seeing the car stopped in a instance) dammit! (Slamming the brakes)
Emily: (being whiplash) what the hell!
Roy: (looking around) why this idiot stop?
Emily: maybe there's a duck crossing?
Roy: hold on this guy is getting out of his car and- running?
Emily: what?
Roy: (seeing something bad) oh Shit! That guy is eating the other dude!
Emily: what the fuck, get us outta here!
Roy: don't worry! (Making a Michigan turn around)
Emily: oh no there's more of them!
Roy: Shit!
Emily: turn that way now!
Roy: (turning almost causing an accident)
Emily: slow down, Roy!
Roy: we're home, get in!
Both ran inside as fast as they could.
Emily: we're safe!
Roy: what the he'll is that?
Emily: I don't know, what ever it is, they are not leaving without some lunch!
Roy: could it be?
Emily: what?
Roy: a zombie-
Zombies breaks through the window and grab Roy.
Roy: Shit, it got me, Emily Run!
Emily: oh my God!
Roy: Emily get the he'll out of here!
Emily: I can't leave you!
Roy: get the- grggh!
Emily: no, Roy (running outside and crying)
She ran through the neighborhood and made it to her friend Nancy's house!
Emily: (ringing the doorbell like a mad person!)
Nancy: I'm coming!
Emily: c'mon, Nancy, Zombie are attacking us!
Nancy: no way! Have you gone mad?
Emily: look (pointing at a zombie)
Nancy: what is that?
Emily: a Zombie! C'Mon let's go!
Nancy: c'mon to the J-Mart!
So Emily and Nancy drove to the J-Mart in a red Ponitac hoping to be save from.the monsters!
