Analysing his situation, standing in the balcony, past midnight with a cigarette between his fingers, he concluded that the 9 months he lived without her in a remote city were less painful than the last few months he lived with her in this city. The pain of having lost someone forever is less hurtful than the fear of losing someone. The feeling of being rejected is much better than the thought of betraying someone.

"Aapke liye ek advice hai. Apne in nazron ko Akka se chupa ke rakhna. Kyunki aapke andar ka chor aapki aankhon me saaf nazar aata hai" Mihika's words rang in his ears.

Mihika had not told him something new. She had just affirmed a fact that he already knew.

Post her accident, Ishita had turned mute to the extent that Raman feared her vocal chord was affected too. After several tests, it was diagnosed that her vocals were fine. It was the trauma that made her mum. Gradually Ishita and Raman had developed a certain technique, whereby they had learnt to speak through their eyes. 

This was the very reason he dared not face Ishita last evening when she had come to convince him to join the prayer meet. He was afraid she would read the truth in his eyes and so he decided to turn his back towards her.

Raman had been hiding the truth from a very long period. Initially he hid the truth because he thought that it was not the right time to tell her. Eventually, he began to feel that there was no need for the truth to be told. Things had settled down well and he believed it will only get better.

But Mihika's arrival had changed everything. Her return had mercilessly blasted the bubble he was living in. Now he had to be cautious and unwillingly or rather unknowingly he was creating a distance between himself and Ishita. He tried to avoid conversation with her and when it was unavoidable he just answered in a word or symbols.

He was affected badly by all the incidents that had taken place in the last two days.

Mihika's sudden appearance, followed by Ishita's panic attack, the memory of his heartbreak coming back to him, the congregational prayer made for the return of Ishita's memory and to top them all, the nightmare he just had. It felt like the entire universe was conspiring against him. Or rather all the elements of the universe trying to remind him that he and Ishita were in a journey together that would end before life.

They were like the two co-passengers who are on a flight, seated on the same row, sharing pleasantries, offering help, communicating like they have known each other for years, holding the others hand inadvertently during turbulence etc etc. The passengers share the same flight, the same row and land at the same destination. But their togetherness is limited to the duration of the flight. Once the journey ends, they go their own ways having nothing to share anymore.

After the heartbreak, Raman had always tried to maintain a distance from Ishita. But as much as he went away, destiny kept bringing them together.

And now when Raman and Ishita were getting closer, destiny was trying to sepearate them. Probably destiny had some grudge against him that it kept shattering his dreams.

"Aaahhhh" he flinches sensing a burn.

The cigarette he had lighted hadn't reached his lips yet. Instead it died between his fingers burning the skin in the process. It had left a scar which kept burning although the flame had gone off. Just like the past had left a scar that kept burning his heart.
