Ruby never told anyone in detail what had been said between her and Dan that evening, and it was much discussed among the ranks of Spectrum. Hitch said nothing of it, he knew when not to talk. Clancy saw that Ruby would never breathe a word and didn't even try to ask. He, like Hitch, knew when things were better left alone. Ruby, acting upon Dan's words decided she would have to look at the case at a different angle. And to do that, she would have to go back to the roots of the case. Her five cases, how were they connected. It wasn't a matter of opportunity or motive, it was finding a pattern. And Ruby found two. That was the reason she knocked on Hitch's door after dinner on Sunday. Sitting down at the chair she always sat in, she handed Hitch the file smugly.
"Two things each case had in common Hitch. One, something was always taken, stolen or is missing." Hitch flicked through the file.
"Case five. Nothing was stolen." Ruby grinned, she had hoped he would say that.
"I thought that was odd. I mean why was the Count chasing other things when the past four times he was looking for something. So I checked the gadgets room log, and the only two things taken during the time of the case were Bradley Baker's pistol and a high frequency whistle." Hitch frowned.
"A high frequency whistle?" Ruby snapped her fingers.
"Bingo. A blast blew out Menhir's ears, there is very little in the world that can do that."
"Of course." Hitch breathed. Then he looked thoughtful.
"But that is six objects. There are only five cases." Ruby nodded.
"The invisible cloak would probably be used to aid a murder. The Count must have given it to whoever he worked for." Hitch nodded.
"Makes sense." Ruby stood up and paced the room.
"The second thing. Each case involved a code of some sort, and each code relied on each of the five senses." Hitch breathed in through his nose.
"And?" Ruby looked at him,
"You ever heard about medieval torture?" Hitch snorted.
"Of course. We do it at Spectrum." Ruby was too afraid to ask if he was joking.
"Medieval torture involved injuring the person by torturing each of their five senses. So they would force feed them horrible things to turn their taste, things like that. I was wandering if someone wants to torture us. To hurt the people close us by killing them in horrible ways." Hitch could see where this was going.
"So...got any theories who is behind all this?"
"Froghorn." Said Ruby. Hitch laughed.
"Are you kidding? Froghorn may be an idiot, but he would never kill anybody, not even to harm you."
"What if I told you he was the one that rented the Baker pistol and the whistle?" Silence. Hitch looked like he couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"Are you sure?"
"Double and triple checked Hitch." The agent sighed. He looked deflated.
"We still do not have enough evidence to accuse him, Ruby."
"I know." She said shortly. "It's just a theory. But it fits. He would have been the one supplying the Count with the stolen stuff during case four." Hitch still looked like he didn't quite believe it.
"I suppose. Are you going to tell LB?"
"No. Like you said, not enough evidence. We both know LB needs something concrete if she is going to do anything about it." Hitch nodded. It sounded like a plan to him. Ruby rose from her chair and walked over to the door. As she was about to leave she swung around.
"Another thing. Froghorn's father was on the flight that killed Bradley Baker. Buzz told me Baker was like a father to Froghorn. That is why he hates me. There is a motive." Hitch waved her away. He didn't want to hear any more bad things about Froghorn. It was tearing him apart.
