The Wait

It took 3 weeks for the CDC to clear the remnants of the anthrax from the hospital. There were 6 casualties and 3 deaths. 2 of those were janitors working near the affected vents. The other. The other death was Doctor Maggie Pierce, Chief of Cardio-Thoracic surgery. And my friend. What I hated most is how disposable the hospital made her out to be. The board members grieved and just like that they were conducting interviews for a new chief. My boards were today and I had no mentor to guide me in how the hell I was supposed to pass these. The studying was overwhelming, day and night I was throwing flashcards at Arizona, making her question me at every available opportunity.

"So, how you feeling kid?" Karev asked as we walked through the hallways of the hospital

"Honestly Alex, I'm freakin shiting myself! I've had next to no surgeries since Maggie, well, since Maggie.. you know" I stuttered through my words, still finding it hard to talk about her "They're putting major surgeries on hold until they hire a new chief and I've been stuck working with Dr Henley on routine cardio surgeries. Alex, routine surgeries are not going to help me pass these boards!" I began to freak out

"Hey, hey Jamie, you're going to ace these, I know you are!" Alex reassured me

"You're just saying that because you have to" I mumbled

"Jamie, look at this way. You get through today, you ace your boards and then you're one of us. You're finally an attending! That is of course if you plan to stay with us. You are staying at Grey-Sloan aren't you?" Alex asked hopefully

"Yeah, with the baby coming and Arizona, I've got too much here, I couldn't just up and leave" I reassured him

"Good, besides, I think Webber would cry if you left." Alex joked

"I think you'd be the one crying Alex" I gave him a small dig to the ribs

"Pfft, please Jamie I would dance around this hospital for weeks if I could get rid of you" he said mockingly

"Hey" I pouted

"You know I'm kidding Jay" He laughed as he took me into a playful hug

"Hands off my wife Karev, Lord knows it took me long enough to get her from you" I heard Arizona's jealous tone come from behind us

"Sorry boss" Alex threw his hands up playfully in defense as he backed away "Good luck kid" he winked as he walked off down the hall

"Do you know how sexy you are when you're jealous?" I mumbled playfully as I pulled Arizona towards me

Arizona let a small giggle escape her lips as she wrapped her arms around my waist, pulling me closer to her, checking the halls before placing her lips softly against me.

"I miss you" she moaned against my lips

"I'm right here" I whispered sarcastically as I rested my forehead against hers

"You know what I mean" she scoffed at my sarcasm

"Well you wanted this demon inside of me, so you ain't getting none of this until he's out of there" I joked

"Hey, our little man is not a demon, he's our little prince" she cooed playfully as she knelt down so that she was holding my out-stretched stomach

"Well at the rate our little prince is deforming my body you won't ever want a piece of this again" I said dramatically as I gestured to my body

"Hey, I will always want every, single part of you" she said softly as she stood up to pull me close once more

"I love you" I whispered against her lips as I kissed her again

"I love you too" she smiled and held my stomach once more "and I want to make love to my wife so please hurry out of there little man" she said sweetly as she looked down at my stomach

I couldn't help but laugh at how adorable she was being. I didn't deserve someone so perfect.

"Hey, I've gotta go and try get a little study done before the bus comes to pick us up. They're holding the oral exams in Tacoma, so at least I'll be home by tonight" I said with a grateful sigh

"Good luck my love" she said sweetly as she placed a soft kiss on my cheek "I'll see you tonight"

"See you later" I smiled as I gave her a playful slap on the butt, watching her turn bright red

"Jamie" she gasped

I replied with a cheeky wink as I walked away laughing to myself.

I only had an hour to revise before the bus arrived to bring us to Tacoma. I don't think I had ever been this nervous in my entire life, other than waiting on Arizona to say "I do" but this is definitely up there with the most nerve wracking moments of my life. It took just under an hour to get to Tacoma. We arrived at the hotel and so the wait began. I sat with Rose as we waited in the hallway on the first floor, flicking through flash cards until we were called in.

My name was soon called and the onslaught of questions began as soon as I sat on the chair across from the examiners. As nice as they were they sure knew how to throw challenging cases at me. Some I had heard of, some I had operated to fix and others I had to utterly bullshit my way through, hoping to God they didn't call my bluff. But as quick as it started, it was over. I was finally free. No more exams. No more testing. Now the wait for the dreaded results began. At least I could go home to Arizona. She'd take my mind off the wait.
