My fingers turn the cold doorknob to my door as it swings open. My mother stands with a smile on her face on the other side.

She claps my hands. "Oh, you look so pretty!"

I roll my eyes and pull my hands out of hers. "Don't say things you don't mean, mother."

I push past her and saunter down the hallway to the stairwell leading to the ballroom. My guards flank me as I reach the stairwell. My chest rises and falls with each breath as I look down. The guests have already arrived.

I feel my mother's cold hand on my back. "It's time for my little princess to make her debut into society."

I inhale a sharp breath and begin descending down the stairs, my mother following closely behind me. An older man waits at the bottom and extends his hand while bowing. I tip my chin and take his hand. He releases it as I reach the very bottom. My eyes examined the room, filled with lords and ladies trying to worm their poofed and powdered way into the royal family. Their eyes bore into mine, their smiles not reaching their eyes.
