Mercer paced the floor and every now and again stopped to look at the map, but always resumed his pace after he shaking his head once or twice.

"Mercer, it's been hours!" I complained, sprawling myself over the desk and the map, but the agitated man didn't flinch.

"Get off the map." He mumbled, stroking his chin as his thought process got visibly deeper.

I sighed, mumbled a few curses, and stood up. I outstretched my arms and cracked my lower back as I scanned the cistern for someone to talk to while Mercer was occupied. No one. I groaned as I starched my head.

Everyone hated being in the Cistern when Mercer was in a bad mood he dampened the smug atmosphere that suited the guild quite well. I, for one, loved when he was angry or pissed off. It meant that sex was on the table for the night, sometime even the second I walked in, just so he could take his mind off whatever was bothering him.

Right now, however, he was more confused than angry. He had spent almost six and a half hours trying to find a safe way into an Orc stronghold but so far wasn't having any luck. He just kept on staring at the map, and making himself angry that he couldn't find a way in, then getting himself even more confused by the whole ordeal. Honestly, it was funny watching him get all flustered, but at the same time I kept my mouth shut to avoid his wrath.

I was just about to go and find someone interesting to talk to when a pair of hands bashed themselves onto the desk, making Mercer and I jump out of our skins.

"I found a breach in the security." Vex yelled, marking a red cross onto the map below her. "Here is a weak area, as far as I know, and It is right where we want to go. There is a guard change that leaves us a four minute window. We get in, we get out."

I smiled and sat back down. Finally Mercer could calm down and take it 'easy' for a while.

"Done, gather Delvin and Rune, they're coming with us. [Y/N] you stay here."

I blinked, not moving for what seemed like hours, as I watched Vex walk away and Mercer fold up the map.

"Excuse me?" I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "I have to stay here?!"

"Yes."

"Why?!"

He started to walk off so I got up and tailed him, slowly but surely I noticed him pick up the pace, but as soon as he did (and once he noticed that I had noticed) he slowed back down.

"Brynolf has a task for you, something about collecting debts from townsfolk."

"And I have to do it? Instead of coming with you when you clearly need more people for the job."

"Yes."

I stopped dead in my tracks as I let Mercer carry on up and out of the Cistern. Me? Stay behind? What is up with him? He normally jumps at every opportunity to let me tag along, why not now?

I climbed the ladder and ran after his stupid ass, he hadn't gotten far. I yanked on his arm to turn him around as he was about to stick his key into his front door.

"Why?"

"What?"

"Why can't I go with you?"

"Because I say so, now follow my orders whelp."

He closed the door behind him and I stood there, staring at it for a whole minute, before people started to take notice and whisper.

Whelp. Nobody, and especially not Mercer had called me that since I aced the Honingbrew estate mission. And the man I loved more than anything just refused me a mission, called me whelp, and slammed the door in my face. I blinked myself out of the trance and looked around me. People, guards, children, staring at me from every which way, and I had no escape route. I was caught in the middle of a battlefield with no weapon and no armour.
