"What instruments do you play?"
" I play a bit of the piano and the violin"
"Have you ever played the guitar?" he says
"No, I haven't. but it would be cool"
His face lifts and I see his eyes widen.
"Would you like me to teach you?"
"Umm okay..sure!" I say enthusiastically
Shawn gets me a guitar hanging from the wall and gets one from the end of his bed.
He hands it over to me using the neck of the instrument and as soon as I hold it, I have no idea how to hold it.
He laughs at me and places it horizontally on my lap. We sit on his bed leaning on his wall and he begins to teach me chords.
"To play c you put your fingers like this" I look at his fingers and try to mimic it on my guitar but I don't quite get it.
Shawn reaches over and places each of my fingers individually in the right fret and strings. he places them delicately and strokes my hand while he is at it.
"there you go! now press hard and keep them there. now take a pick and strum.
he hands me a piece of plastic which I am guessing is a pick. I take it from him and do a strum. it sounds pretty good.
"that sounds awesome!"
he shows me all the popular chords like A – G – E – D – Am – Em – Dm. and by the end I have them all memorized.
"you have got it! a piece of cake right!?"
"Yeah, it's not that hard!" I say back pretty pleased with myself.
I start to stum some of the chords over again just replaying them in my head
"can you teach me one of your songs?" I ask
he looks up and smiles.
"sure which one do you wanna know?"
"umm life of the party".
he takes a clip from his bedside table and puts it on capo 2.
he shows me the simple chords at the beginning and I copied him. E minor, C chord, G minor, A chord. he grabs my hand and shows me how to palm mute. he places my hand on the strings. then he teaches me the chorus. G chord, C chord, E minor, C chord and before I know it we are singing a duet together. it's magical.
