The first day of the Christmas Holiday was cold. Like, cold.
Maybe it was just because she'd grown up in a warmer climate, but Hogwarts was snowed in by the time evening came. Olivia and Javier, her brother, usually stayed at Christmas because their parents went away somewhere. Sometimes Eve and Gabriella stayed, but this year it was just Eve.
"Andrew's staying too," Eve explained to Olivia that evening as they made their way into the Great Hall for dinner. "And I don't like to go home without him." Olivia nodded, then paused as they entered the hall.
"¿Qué-?" Olivia asked for the both them, startled. There was just one table.
"I didn't see the point of keeping out the house tables when there's only six of you," Headmaster Dippet told the two girls as they sat down. The girls nodded. At the table were Javier and one of his friends, Andrew and Tom. Olivia and Eve shared a look as they began helping themselves to food. Only a few minutes later, Javier and his friend left the dinner table, seemingly finished with their meals. Another few minutes later, Andrew started to talk.
"So," he started, picking up some bread. "How's your holiday been so far?"
"Brilliant," Eve replied. "We spent the entire day walking around the common room naked."
"No, you spent it naked," Olivia corrected. "I spent it in blankets."
"Cool," Andrew replied, nodding. "So, how warm is your common room, then?"
"Very. Olivia just finds it colder because of the climate," Eve explained.
"Too cold for you here?" Andrew asked Olivia.
"Eh," Olivia replied, putting down her fork. Yet again, she'd managed to make eye contact with Tom. It was accidental, as usual, but Olivia suspected it was becoming a hobby of hers. This time, though, she managed to drag her eyes away and stood up.
"I need to send this to Madre," she said suddenly, holding up a letter. "Adios."Olivia didn't know why she had wanted to make a quick escape; usually, she'd go with Eve. Maybe it was Tom.
It probably was Tom.
Olivia just did not understand it. Why was he one of the only things on her mind right now? She plenty else to think about. But no. No. It was him. Tom. She was kind of sick of his name already.
Olivia stroked her and Javier's owl (they shared one because they were both still at Hogwarts), Lechuza (it was Spanish for owl; they weren't very creative). He was a beautiful owl, and Olivia often found talking to him relaxing.
"Am I going crazy?" she asked the owl gently, starting to attach the letter to his leg.
"Considering you're talking to an owl, I'd say yes," someone answered from behind, making Olivia paused in the middle of tying the letter to his leg and whirl around.
"Tom. What are you doing here?" she asked, unable to think of a suitable comeback.
"Making sure nothing bad happens."
"Why? No one's here. Literally. No one."
"I still don't think it's perfectly safe for a young woman to be out at night alone."
There are so many fights I can start from that statement," Olivia told him, going back to her owl. She heard Tom move and so forced herself not to turn.Nevertheless, her senses were on fire for some reason.
Tom stopped right behind her so that she could feel his breath on her neck; it took away hers. Olivia sent her bird off with a simple, "Adios," and slowly turned around. This close, all Olivia could look at was Tom's eyes. She bit her lip in frustration.
"Can I help you?" she asked.
"Say it in Spanish," he ordered, though he sounded emotionless.
"¿Te puedo ayudar?" she repeated in her native tongue.
"I find you interesting, Olivia," he said, calling her by her first name for the first time, and Olivia found it interesting the way he said her name; for some unknown reason, it was the only way she ever wanted to hear it again. When they kissed again, Olivia knew she was going crazy.
