Chapter 6

Moana's POV

  I notice that Maui's been awfully quiet for the past few hours and the thought of why that could be has been bothering more than it should. This is silly, I should just ask him if he's okay. I take a deep breath and walk over to him, gently tapping him on the shoulder. When I do, I notice a couple of tattoos on his back that catch my eye, causing my mind to go blank when Maui turns around and looks up at me. "Yes Moana?" "A-Are you okay Maui?" "I'm fine", he says in an empty tone of voice. I frown. "You don't seem fine Maui. I know that I can't force you to talk, but if you want to, I'm here for you." He glares at me. "Kid, no one is "here" for me so please don't pretend to be. The only person who has me is me." A moment of silence passes before I decide to question his tattoos. "How do you earn your tattoos?" 

   My question throws him off guard but I earn an eye roll from him. "They show up when I earn them." I point to the big one on his back where it appears that a woman is throwing a baby into the ocean. "How'd you earn that one?" "That's man's discovery of nunya." I look at him in confusion. "What's nunya?" "Nunya business." I roll my eyes. I'm smarter than that. I honestly should have seen that coming. How stupid of me. "Is that why your hook's not working?" Maui then gets up close and personal. "STOP!!!" I simply hit him with my oar and he throws me into the ocean out of anger, but the ocean is quick to rescue me and lift me back onto the boat. "You don't want to talk, don't talk. If you want to throw me off the boat, throw me off. If you want to tell me I don't know what I'm doing, I know I don't! I have no idea why the ocean chose me, but my island is dying so I'm here. It's just me and you. I want to help, but I can't if you won't let me Maui." 

   "I wasn't born a demigod, I had human parents. They... uh... took one look and decided that... they did not want me. They threw me into the sea, like I was nothing. Somehow I was found by the gods, they gave me the hook, they made me Maui. And back to the humans I went... I gave them islands, fire, coconuts... anything they could ever want." I gasp. "You took the heart for them, so that they would love you." Maui looks down sadly. "It was... never enough." I sit down beside him and look straight into his eyes. "Maybe the gods found you for a reason, maybe the ocean brought you to them because it saw someone who was worthy of being saved. But the gods aren't the ones, who make you Maui, you are." With that being said, I leave him be for a little while to reflect on my words, though my heart strings are pulled at I watch mini Maui hug Maui right across his heart. 

   I finally understand why Maui did what he did. Maui didn't still the heart to be a villain, he stole it because he desperately wanted to be loved by humans. Maui never got the love he deserved from his parents and that altered him in a major way. Sailing across the ocean to Te Fiti to restore her heart is not only a chance for him to redeem himself, but it's also a second chance for him to become a better man. 

A couple hours later...

   Maui taps me on the shoulder. "Moana?" I look up at him with a small smile. "What's up Maui?" He scratches the back of his head. "I wanted to apologize for snapping at you earlier and throwing you off the boat. I wasn't angry at you, I was angry at myself, but I've been doing a lot of thinking about what you said to me a couple hours ago, and I wanted to say thank you." I sing song reply "You're Welcome", making him crack a smile. "I didn't see that coming, but it sounds less stupid coming out of your mouth than it does mine." I extend a hand out for him to shake. "I'm ready to start fresh and I'd like to be friends. What do you say? Let's put our rocky start in the past and try again." He immediately shakes my head. "Friends it is." I smile. I'm glad that I'm starting to make a friend out of Maui. Him and I both need in each other more than we realize. 

  Hoped that you guys liked this part of this one shot! :) Just so you know, there won't be any updates tomorrow and possibly not Friday either. I'll try to update Friday if I can, but I'm not too certain yet. I have some crazy shifts at work the next couple of days that will sadly get in the way of me updating, at least tomorrow night for sure. -Mary
