Chapter 16

Moana's POV

Maui and I are relaxing in his cave when all of the sudden he jumps out of bed, stands up in front of me, and grins like a maniac. I burst into a giggle fit because he looks really silly right now. "Maui, what's going on?" He doesn't respond to me verbally, but motions for me to follow him. I raise an eyebrow but follow him because I like to think that I can trust my own boyfriend, despite him being known as a trickster. Maui leads me to the waterfall, which is now filled with flower petals. I look at it and him in awe. "Did you do this?" He nods while blushing. "Y-Yeah I did. You and I haven't had a proper first date yet so I figured that we could have in a place that we both enjoy." He motions to a picnic basket. "I also have a huge supply of fruit so we won't starve all day." I grin at him. "You're the best Maui." I throw myself into his arms. "Gah, I love you!" Maui chuckles and wraps his arms around me, giving me one of his bear hugs. "I love you too Princess."

Maui and I spend the afternoon goofing around while eating fruit before the conversation begins to take a serious turn. "Moana, can I ask you a question?" My heart always races when someone says those words to me. I nod, not trusting my voice to shake right now. "Am I ruining your life?" I look at him in confusion. "What do you mean?" Maui sighs and scratches the back of his neck. "I know you and your parents had a lot of problems, but I can't help but feel slightly guilty for just leaving that quickly. You had your parents in your life for almost seventeen years. That's nearly seventeen more years than I had mine in my life." "Maui, it isn't a competition." He rolls his eyes. "You know what I mean Mo." I sigh. "I know Maui, but to answer your question, you haven't ruined my life."

I take a deep breath before looking up at Maui. "Maui, there's something I need to tell you. It'll help you better understand why I was so eager to leave my "home" in Florida." Maui moves closer to me and makes it clear that he's ready to listen. "I know you're aware that my parents were difficult to deal with quite often... but when I was twelve... my dad did something to me when my mom was out shopping one night that haunts me each and every day. I was just getting out of the shower. I was in nothing but a bath towel. My stupid self forgot to lock the bathroom door so I didn't realize that my dad had come into the bathroom until I got out of the shower... He then proceeded to pull my towel off of me and stare at my naked body." I think Maui's beginning to put two and two together. His eyebrows furrow together and he looks at me with both shock and anger.

"Don't tell me that son of a bitch of raped you... did he?" I can't meet Maui in the eyes, giving away that my mean father indeed raped me. I've never told anyone this before. I was going to tell Grandma Tala, but I thought better of it because I didn't want her to shun her own son. That would have been far too painful for her to do. "Moana, why didn't you tell me before? I would have given him the beating that he deserves." My body begins to shake. "I-I didn't think it was important at the time." Maui gently cups my face, beginning to calm down a bit but still appearing somewhat angry. "Moana, your father raping you is important to know. I still may be learning about your realm, but I'm sure they had some kind of law enforcement there you could have reported it to." "I did report it to law enforcement, the police to be exact. They arrested him during the middle of the night when my mother was asleep, but she bailed him out the next morning. She didn't know that he raped me. He simply told her it was for assault, that him and some random guy at a bar got into a nasty fight."

Maui puts his hands on my shoulders gently, stroking them in a soothing manner. "Moana, I'm really sorry your father did that to you. If I was there, I would have put a stop to it before he... for the lack of better words... put himself inside of you. Your father violated you sexually. That is not forgivable in my book." I nod in agreement. My eyes are watery and tears are threatening to spill. Maui senses it because he pulls me into a hug and lets me let it out. When I'm done, I'm left with puffy eyes and a nose full of snot. It's really gross. I probably shouldn't have said that. Sorry. I sometimes don't have a filter. I'm working on that though. "Moana, I really appreciate you telling me that, despite how awful it was." "Maui, you're the first person I've ever told that. I've kept it to myself for almost five years because I was afraid. The funny thing is now I don't have to be afraid anymore. Right?" Maui wraps his arms around me from behind and kisses my forehead tenderly. "No my love, you don't have to be afraid anymore. I'm here to protect you for all my days." I close my eyes and nod, quickly falling asleep in his arms. It turns out that emotional breakdowns suck a lot of energy out of a person quickly.
