( I don't have a specific timeframe in mind so let's just go with 21st Century)

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be in a fairytale where everything is about finding true love and happily ever after? To have a prince sweep you off your feet and tell you they love you? To be willing to do everything for that knight in shining armor and him do the same thing for you, his damsel in distress? But trust me, there are some fairytales that you do not want to experience. It may end with happily ever afters but what really happens once they supposedly find love and get married? Or is love at first sight really real?

It all started when I was eight. My parents died in a house fire while I was able to escape along with my one year-old little brother, Jace. I had nowhere to go and once the king found out about it, he sent us to live in the castle but in return, I had to work as a maid. For nine years, I had to sweep the floors, wash the dishes, dust here and there, and even help in cooking every once in a while. It may seem brutal considering that it is practically child labor but I didn't mind because I know that I'll be doing not only for my sake but my brother's as well. And it's not that bad. A friend of my mother's who works at the palace took me under her wing as soon as I got there and has helped me through a lot of things.

"Y/n." A voice said from behind me as I wiped the windows clean in the castle's library. A pair of hands were soon placed on either side of my waist.

"Your highness." I said, turning around to face him, his deep brown eyes staring into my e/c ones.

"How many times have I told you to call me by my name, love?"

"Hundreds of times but I'm only doing it in case you happen to be with your father."

"Forget the formalities, babe. It's just me."

"Exactly why I need to say it."

He shook his head, smiling at me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me close to him as I wrapped mine around his neck, dripping the rag on the floor. He leaned down and pressed a kiss to my forehead, making me release a sigh of relief. I needed that. I kind of missed this little idiot after not seeing each other in weeks. He leaned down a little more and captured my lips in his, kissing me as if it's the last time we'll ever see each other again.

"Y/n!" Dizzy said, running into the library- making Shawn and I pull away from each other abruptly- only to stop midway once she saw who I was with and curtsied. "Your highness."

"Please don't bow, Diz. You practically raised me." Shawn chuckled, awkwardly stepping away from me.

"Y/n, I'll cover for you from here. Jace's fever is staring to go down a little but he still wants you to look after him at the moment. Poor kid, I had to make Cas watch after him just so I could get you."

I let out a giggle, imagining how painful it would be for him to be left with Cas. Everybody knows how talkative she is at times and when she's not, she just stares at you creepily. (Sorry to anyone who's named Cas) I turned back to Shawn and gave him a polite bow before rushing out of the room. I made my way out to the garden- the living quarters for us servants are separated from the castle- only to bump into someone by the rotunda. I looked down to see my little brother staring at me before pulling me into a bear hug.

"Y/n, thank goodness you're here! Aunt Dizzy left me with Cas!" He ranted as I chuckled at him.

"What are you doing out here? The doctor said that you are supposed to be on bed rest." I said, bending down to his height.

"I couldn't stand being stuck with her! Please y/n! Tell me your shift is over."

"I'm free for the rest of the day, now come on."

I spent the remaining half of the day taking care of him, even eating our dinner in the room just so I would know that he drinks his medicine. Once he was out cold, I snuck out to the garden behind the castle. Passing through the maze, I couldn't help but quicken the pace as I neared the secret gate covered in vines I've come to be familiar with. I pushed it inwards, stepping into the hidden portion of the garden where a set of swings and a small fish pond could be found along with various types of flora growing on the walls. That was when I saw him, the prince himself, sitting on one of the swings, making a soft screeching sound as he swayed back and forth.

"Shawn." I uttered, catching his attention.

He got up from the swing and ran to me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me towards him. I could tell just by this simple gesture that something wasn't right. He usually just smiles at me before walking over and placing a kiss on my head. And I have learned from previous experiences that he only does this when he's either mad, nervous, or upset.

"Shawn, what's wrong?" I asked, pulling away slightly and placing my hand on his cheek, making his lean into the touch.

"What are you talking about?" He asked, nervously biting his lip, making something in me react to his action.

"You're usually all calm and happy when I get here. What's bothering you, love? And please stop biting your lip like that."

"Why? Does it bother you?"

"Yes, now don't avoid the question. What's going on in the pretty little head of yours?"

"I don't think you'll be calling it little any time soon."

"Shawn!"

He sighed and moved us over to the swings. Once he sat down, he pulled me over to sit on his lap. He rested forehead against mine and placed a small kiss on the tip of my nose.

"My father told me that they would be holding a ball next week for me to be able to find a wife. I tried to tell him that I would rather marry out of love but he thinks marrying a royal would be better for the kingdom." He explained, keeping his eyes on the soil as my eyes watered.

"So does this mean that I can't see you anymore?" I muttered.

"No, no baby. I'll try. I'll try everything I can to fight for us. I love you too much to let you go. Do you love me?"

"Of course, your highness. I'm afraid to admit that a commoner like me has fallen in love with a royalty like you."

"Then run away with me."

"We both know that we can't."

"We can! We can runaway together, live in a cabin by the river that we've stuck out to before and have a family of our own."

"And who will be the heir to the throne? Who will run the kingdom?"

"Aaliyah can. She's much more responsible than I am. She knows what to do and all that."

"Shawn..." I got off his lap and bent down so he could look into my eyes. "Running away is never the best solution to your problems."

"I know but I don't want to fail you." He said, looking down at me with tears clouding his eyes.

"Oh, my love. You can never fail me. I will always love you no matter what."

A/N: I've been reading too many Gender bent Disney/ Disney Descendants x Reader Imagines which led me to this. (I think it's obvious since I literally named a character as Drizella's daughter, Dizzy) Don't worry. There is a part 2... It would probably reach up to part 3 or 4. I'm just not used to publishing an imagine worth 2000+ words since I usually only post up to 1200-1500.

10 votes & 10 comments requesting for part two and I'll upload it 😝😂
