Popularity. One word that for some means everything but in reality, it just makes everything even more toxic. Try to fit in, have everyone know about you, all that bullshit. I guess that's what annoys me the most. You're being anyone other than yourself just to make yourself seem superior to others. You try to do something out of character to be noticed.  In fact, there are times wherein you ditch the truest friends just to be with the popular kids.

I know, it sounds like something out of a movie but believe me, it's pretty accurate. It just happens that the ones in the films are over-exaggerated. And as obvious as it is, I'm not one of them, thank God, but I'm not one of the losers either. I'm somewhere in the middle, a place where their victims wish they could be in.

I'm not a fan of popularity, I guess I've already made that clear. The reason behind that, my friends decided to ditch me to become one of those stereotypical bitchy cheerleaders. They left me once I said that I was no way in hell joining the team. They weren't even the first ones to do so.

"Earth to y/n." Alex said, bringing me back to reality as I stared off into my locker, snapping his fingers in front of my eyes.

"Uh, yeah? Sorry. Lost in thought." I said sheepishly.

"I really think we should get you checked out. You keep staring off as if you've seen a ghost."

"Oh shut up, dumb ass. I just couldn't sleep as much last night."

"Why? Did you watch Sultan Sketches' video about sleep paralysis again? The last time you did, you weren't able to sleep for three straight days."

"No. I learned my lesson. A certain neighbor was watching some stupid horror film. I couldn't sleep with all of the screaming coming from the actors. I don't know how the hell it was possible to hear it from my room but it was... it was kind of terrifying."

"Oh honey, I feel so bad for you." He said, chuckling as he threw his arm around me.

"I can really feel your sympathy, Alex." I groaned, grabbing my stuff from the locker and slamming it shut, shrugging him off of me.

He just chuckled as I rolled my eyes and started walking to my first class. Him being in the same class, followed me and even had the audacity to place him arm around me once again only to be pushed off. The day went on slow. The lectures were pretty much pointless, my classmates were even much bigger idiots than I though, and everyone was making such a big deal about prom. Just another typical day in a high school meant for teen fiction stories. Once it ended, I couldn't help but rejoice, grabbing onto Alex's hand and practically dragging him out of the room.

"I think we should make a cover some time this week." He said, placing his things into his locker as I leaned against the ones beside his. "It's been too long since I made one and I think it's time you sing with me."

"Alex... I would love to but you know that I haven't sung since..." I couldn't help but trail off as a familiar figure passed by me.

"Since you and Shawn stopped talking, I know."

"Sorry. It's just that I lost interest in singing after that. It just... I don't know, doesn't feel right when the only reason why you started to do so decided to turn his back on you."

"I get it but just know that my offer will always be open."

"Thanks."

"What the fuck?!" I heard Shawn yell from the other side of the hall.

I couldn't help but push myself off the lockers and walk towards the commotion, just like everyone else. I felt sad for him once I processed the situation in front of me. His whore of a girlfriend had her arms around one of his best friends, lipstick smudged and transferred on his face. I looked back to my former best friend to see him fighting back his tears.
