"You did what?!" Steve shouts, swerving the car off the road a little.
"Watch the road!" Frankie exclaims. "And yeah, I sorta might've kinda told Mike. And Will..."
"What do you mean 'sorta might've kinda'?! Either you did or you didn't. Which is it?" He grumbles, glancing towards the girl with worry. His car bounces on the un-paved road as he drives towards Frankie's house.
"I told Will everything. H-He's my boyfriend...I think? He hasn't actually asked me out technically— th-that is how it works right? He's supposed to ask?—"
"FRANKIE, concentrate," Steve demands, snapping his fingers in the girl's face. "Yes, he's supposed to ask, and I thought you two were already dating?"
"Sorry— NO! We weren't dating! Jeez, Steve, stop assuming everything. Anyway, I showed Mike the number," she admits with a guilty frown. "He just made me so mad, and made me feel like I was such an outsider when really I'm smack dab in the middle of everything..."
Steve sighs.
"Frankie, you could get into a lot of trouble if anyone else finds out who you are. You can't tell anyone else. Do you understand?"
The girl gives a simple nod, knowing what she did was dumb.
"He's gonna have so many questions..." she mumbles, referring to Mike.
"Well yeah," he nods. "Who wouldn't be curious?"
"Steve, I just feel like I don't belong. Ya know? I feel like maybe it'd be better if those lab rats ended up finding me, and just took me back. I feel like I'm ruining things here..." she sighs.
Steve turns to her with a serious look.
"What the hell are you talking about, Fran? Who said you were ruining things? You're not even close to being a bother to anyone," he insists.
"Mike said Will wasn't this bad until I showed up. Do you think anything might have to do with me?"
"No," Steve shakes his head, "I promise you everything will be fine."
She nods, and the two go back to sitting in a comfortable silence for the rest of the ride to her house. Frankie can't help but replay the events at the school. Will looked so afraid, and she could feel it. It was terrible.
She decides to take her mind off things.
"Is his sister as mean?" She softly asks. "Mike's sister.."
Steve turns to her with a small blush.
"Oh, uh...." he racks his mind for the right words to use. "She's not mean. She's pretty, and smart, and stubbornly determined. She's special. Nancy Wheeler isn't like any other girl in the world."
"You really like her, huh?"
"Why do you say that?" Steve chuckles. "I mean, I do, but how can you tell?"
Frankie shrugs and hides her wide smile by turning to face the car window.
"Because that's exactly the same tone of voice I'd use to describe Will. And I really like him."
