Chapter 37

I walked into the court room. Reporters and superheroes were in the court room. I took a seat at the defendant's table. I looked behind me and Dick gave me a smile. I saw Alfred sitting in the back row with Jamie in his lap.

"All rise for His honorable, Judge Booth." Everyone stood.

"Today's trial. Zodiac vs. the City of Metropolis." The judge said.

"The defendant's opening statement?" The judge asked.

My lawyer stood up. "The defendant claims she was under the influence of powerful magic that did not give her full control of her actions." My lawyer sat down.

I held onto Dick tight, as though he were a rock and I was a crab holding on with all my night fearing the waves would wash me away from this rock of safety. I had a bad feeling about the outcome of the trial.

"It's going to be alright." He said as he rubbed circles on my back.

"What will the league do if I'm convicted?" I asked.

"They haven't made any comments and I doubt they will." Dick said.

"I feel dirty." I Said.

"You showered this morning." Dick said.

"Not like that. I feel guilty like this isn't going to end well for me."

Dick grabbed me by my shoulders. "Don't say that. We both know you're innocent." He said sternly.

"I know I'm not, I killed him. I killed the mayor. I don't think they'll let me get off Scott-free. It was broad daylight, Dick. There were civilians and press. They all saw, they have videos. They can't prove I was under anyone's control." I said as tears rolled down my face.

Dick kissed my forehead. "I will still stand by you." He Said as he held onto me

I sat at the defendants table, starring at my lap.

"We the members of the jury here bY find the defendant guilty." The juror said. His words felt like knives being driven through me.

"I here by sentence Zodiac twelve years at Bel Rev." The judge said.

I got up and hugged Dick. "I love you, be strong." he whispered.

"Take care of Jamie." I whispered.

Guards came and pulled me away from Dick. "I love you Nightwing." I said as they cuffed me and put a collar on me. Bruce held his hand on Dick's shoulder to hold him back.

I sat in the holding cell. They were going to transport me to Bel Rev in the morning.

Bruce came in. "I cashed in a few favors with Waller and they'll allow you to wear your mask while you're there." He said.

"Thank you." I said. He gave a small jar of spirit gum.

"Thank you." I said. He nodded and left.

I sat in the bus, my wrists cuffed in state of the art handcuffs. They were impossible to break by any meta but not impossible to pick the lock. Even though I could I didn't. I had to serve my sentence with dignity.

I leaned back, bored out of my mind. The guard stood a few feet away.

"So can I strike up a conversation with you or not?" I asked.

"Be quiet." The guard asked. That answered my question.

The van stopped and the guard ordered me to stand up. He escorted me out and we were inside the prison wall. Guards were everywhere some looking at me.

"Welcome to Bel Reve Penitentiary. I am your warden Amanda Waller." She said.

"As you know Zodiac, that collar around your neck prohibits your from using your powers. In addition the collars can and will be used in discipline inmates. a con who breaks the rules will get a warning." She pressed a button and the collar shocked me. I held my ground as the collar shocked me.

"If order has not been restored, the next shock will render the con unconscious." She said.

I was take in searched sent through multiple metal detectors and x ray machines to make sure I had nothing on myself.

"What's this?" A guard asked about the spirit gum.

"That is standard spirit gum. It's to keep my mask on." I said.

"Let her keep it." Waller said as she approached me. I was given a jumpsuit then escorted to a cell.

It was an entire month before Dick came to visit me. I was escorted to the visiting quarters. The guard took my cuffs off and I went over to Dick. I hugged him.

"I missed you so much." I said.

"I missed you too." He said.

"Did you bring the Spirit gum?" I asked. He took out a new bottle from hit utility belt and gave it to me.

"Thank you." I smiled.

"How's our daughter?" I asked.

"She's growing like a weed. It's hard to believe she's five months old." He said as he took out a photo of Jamie in the garden at the Wayne Manor.

"She's so precious." I smiled. I put the spirit gum in my pocket and held the photo.

"She's laughing now, Red Hood is always making her laugh." Dick smiled.

"He was always the comedic one." I said.

"It's weird to think that he also spent time here." Dick said.

"It is," I said.

"Why didn't she come with you?" I asked.

"Canary And Arrow wanted to watch her for a while and I quote, 'be better grandparents.'" Dick said.

"I swear if they take her on a mission." I said shaking my head.

"They won't, I made it clear to them not to." He said.

I smiled. "I miss you so much." I said as I hugged Dick again. Soon my visitation time was over.

I went back to my cell and took used the last of my spirit gum to hang the photo of Jamie up on the bottom of the top bunk. I laid down and stared at the photo of my daughter. I picked up the War and Peace book from under my bed and continued reading it.
