I was at home, impatiently waiting the news. Augustus was hospitalized, and I had no idea how he was doing.
At this point, he may as well have been dead. But I knew Augustus, and I knew he would keep fighting no matter what it took. But sometimes no matter how hard you fight, the thing you're fighting ends up winning.
I just hoped that wasn't the case with Gus.
My phone rang - it was Augustus's mom.
"Hazel?" She asked when I answered.
"Yes?" I asked, almost scared to hear what she was going to tell me. I couldn't tell if she was elated or upset...she almost sounded like a monotone.
"Come to the hospital. Just you, as fast as you can." She said.
Monotone.
"Why?" I begged.
"Just come."
And then she hung up.

I shoved my way through the hospital door. By then the receptionist knew me, so she didn't even question my bolt to the elevator.
I ran out the door after the elevator dinged. I slowly but quickly opened the door to Augustus's room, and was greeted with
One...two...three....smiling faces.
The Augustus Waters of unsmoked cigarettes was alive, and smiling is quirkiest smile right my way.
