❝concentrate on something else❞

When she wakes up, she's confused.

She takes a moment to wake up properly, before she hears the faint beating of a heart monitor and the familiar ceiling of the attic. Why am I here?

She sits up slowly, seeing no one around. She takes off the wires connected to her and hisses slightly at the stinging pain that comes with it.

She climbs up off of the bed she was laid on and her bare feet touch the cold floor. She feels herself grow colder as she walks down the stairs to the second floor where her bedroom was.

She couldn't remember which bedroom was hers and opens the first door she reaches. It looked plain and boring, the bed made and everything perfectly in place, where it's meant to be. She turns to leave, knowing it isn't her room but a photograph catches her eyes and she hesitantly walks towards it.

She looks at it with wonder. It was an old picture, she knew. Brad was in it, his hair was longer and curlier than it is now, and he was still very baby-faced. Next to him was a boy she didn't recognise, but he had dark, blonde hair and magnificent blue eyes. She assumed it was James.

The pair looked happy next to each other, grinning into the camera while, in the background, Tristan had his palm out, causing Connor to be halfway through the air. Brad and his friend probably didn't even know that was happening until after the picture was taken. Her fingers trace over Brad's face, a hint of a smile on her face.

"That's James."

She was surprised to hear a voice, but she instantly recognised it as Brad's. She turns on her heels and faces him, a small smile on his face.

"Hi," she whispers, her voice cracked and hoarse after not speaking in so long. He grabs a jacket, handing it to her as he notices the goosebumps rising on her skin.

"Keep warm," he instructs and she hesitantly takes the jacket and places it over her shoulders. "How are you feeling?"

"I'm. . . fine? Why was I up there?" She questions. "Am I meant to feel sick or something?"

He chuckles, "you collapsed last week. We hooked you up to the machine to monitor how your body was and to do some research. Your body reacted weirdly as the fire and ice elements crossed path in your bloodstream."

He felt somewhat guilty because if it wasn't for him teaching her to use her fire, then the ice and fire elements wouldn't have crossed paths and she would've been fine.

"Oh."

He smiles halfheartedly, "lets get you something to eat."

She nods, following him down the stairs, ignoring the frost that formed wherever her feet touched the floor. She heard Tristan and Connor talking between each other in the kitchen and she walks faster, excited to see her other two friends.
