"Why didn't you tell me that you'll be leaving for New York?" Bungad na tanong ko kay Ken na halatang nagulat sa sinabi ko.
"How did you know?"
"So you don't want to tell me about your promotion, huh? You just told me that you were promoted! No more details!" Saka ako padabog na umupo sa tapat nya.
"Mace, I'm planning to tell you.."
"When, huh? When you're about to leave? Seriously?! Your officemates already knew about that, and I was left behind?"
Hindi ko na napigilan, tumataas na ang boses ko habang sya medyo kalmado pa rin.
"Mace.."
"What?!" Bumuntong hininga sya.
"C'mon, I wanna talk about the promotion details with you, privately. Not like this." Inabot nya yung kamay ko. "I wanna have dinner with you because I wanna celebrate it, because you're my inspiration."
Nanahimik lang ako at sumunod sa kanya sa parking. He drove for almost two hours para marating ang may kalumaang pero maayos na bahay.
"Where are we?"
"Our ancestral house." Saka nya tinigil ang kotse. Bumaba sya at pinagbuksan ako ng pinto. He offered his hand but I rejected it.
Lumabas ako at tumayo sa gilid ng kotse. He offered his hand again pero umiling ako.
"Not until you tell me all about your promotion." Tumango sya.
"Can you at least walk beside me?" Tumango ako.
Lumakad kami hanggang sa garden ng ancestral house nila. Umupo kami sa upuan doon pero magkatapat kami.
"Talk." Sabi ko.
Huming sya ng malalim. "Okay, when I found out about the promotion, I thought it'll be here, in the Manila branch. So, I did my best to get the promotion. When I got it, I was shocked as well, when I found out that it'll be in New York." Dire-diretso nyang sabi.
Huminga sya ng malalim at nagsalita. "Macey, I have no idea about New York. I swear." Nag-taas pa ng sya ng kamay.
Nakatitig lang ako sa kanya.
"Did you accept it?"
"I haven't said yes to them. I said that I'll think about it."
"What did tita Elia said?"
Huminga ulit sya ng malalim.
"She's happy. But she told me that I have to ask you if you're okay with this, because we're in a relationship. And I care about your opinion."
"And?"
"What do you mean, and?"
"And when are you leaving if I said yes?"
Tumungo sya.
"As soon as possible."
I tried to hold my tears but I can't. May tumulo nang luha sa mata ko pero agad ko itong pinunasan.
"Exact date?"
"3 weeks from now."
"What?! 3 weeks from now?" Tumango sya.
