“Look, Fin,” Jersey said early the next morning on our way to work. She had turned down the radio so I could hear her speak. I paid her no mind and remained looking out the window in the backseat. Today was a rainy day. The roads were slippery, but that didn’t stop cars from driving the speed limit, if not more. Surprisingly, Jersey was probably the only one on the road being cautious. Cars zoomed past to skip us on the highway and each time one drove past us, Jersey screamed out a swear word that they obviously couldn’t hear. I glanced up towards the front but only for a second. The front windshield could barely be seen through. “I’m sorry about last night, I guess,” Jersey finally finished the sentence she had started. I rolled my eyes at her sorry apology.

I felt Jersey glance back at me and she groaned when she noticed I wasn’t paying her any mind. “It’s just that I care about-“

“Jersey, you don’t care about anyone but yourself! I know that! Gavin knows that! Everyone at the parlor knows that! So, why don’t you save your crap and your sorry excuses for someone else?!”

“Can you guys not argue? It’s already scary that it’s raining and Jersey’s the fucking driver,” Gavin yelled in the most agitated voice I’ve ever heard come from him. “Jersey’s selfish, and you don’t like her. We get it, Finley!” Gavin leant back in the passenger seat and covered his hands with his eyes. “I’m sorry, but you’re both just being mingy pricks.”

“Mingy?”

“Shut the fuck up, Jersey.”

We all ran into the parlor trying to beat the rain, but we obviously all got wet. Jersey went straight into her office and slammed the door behind her. Gavin walked out to the front of the parlor before switching the lights on, and I followed behind him. He went to his station without a word and pulled out of his phone. I walked up to the receptionist desk and sat behind it. Turning on the computer, and just staring at the desktop for a while, I decided to pull out my phone, too. I was about to send a text, until I felt the presence of someone standing behind me. I turned around in the leather swivel chair, only to see Alfie looking at me with his brows raised. “What’d you do to Jersey now? Most importantly, why the hell were you just about to text Nicky?”

Alfie crossed his arms as he waited for my answer. “Why I’m texting Nicky is none of your business. She’s my girlfriend, and if I want to text her I can. If I wanted to talk to her I can. If I want to call her, I can! You, Jersey, Mom, and everyone else just needs to stay out of my relationship. It’s none of you guys’ business,” I responded through clenched teeth. Alfie just gave me a small smile before shaking his head.

“No one can get through to you with your big ass, hard ass head!” Alfie thumped my forehead, and I grabbed it with pain. “You think that hurts, just think about what Nicky will do to you once you get back with her! Finley, you’re my sister. I love you, and I would defend you with my life; but you’re stupid as fuck! No matter how much I try to get you away from her, you always run back. So, fuck it! I don’t give a fuck anymore. Do what you want. It’s your life. You’re right. Jersey, Mom and I have no reason to be in your relationship.” With that, Alfie walked away from me and went back to his station. I slowly turned back around in my swivel chair, only to see Jade.

“Big brother is mad with little sister,” she asked in a kiddy voice before giggling. Jade walked behind the desk, and took a seat in the other chair beside me. “You know, I’ve never seen Alfie that mad. What did you? Did you like destroy his That ‘70s Show DVD Collection or what?” Jade pulled out an orange and began peeling it as she leant back in her chair.

“It’s stupid. Don’t worry about it,” I replied.

“I understand you not wanting to tell me your personal business. Just know that your brother is very fucking smart, don’t tell him I told you that, but he’s like a genius. What he’s telling you is probably for your best, so just consider his little opinion.” The girl held out the orange towards me. “Want some?” I shook my head, and looked down at my phone that had vibrated in my hands.
