Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
Hiccup frowned as he saw his friend's eyes turn from there usual round shape to slits.

"Bud, it's me!" He shouted, backing away from his dragon who was going to shoot plasma at him any moment now.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
This was it. This was how he would die.

Hearing footsteps from his left, he turned and saw Astrid running towards him.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
"ASTRID, NO!" He shouted putting his hand up to stop her, but it was too late.

Toothless shot the plasma blast from his mouth, hitting Astrid who pushed Hiccup out of the way.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
Hiccup heard nothing but his heart beat. Everything was quiet. Calm, maybe. Just for a moment in time.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
Then everything came back. His eyes widened as he stood up and ran to Astrid.

"No" He whispered sharply, tears rolling down his cheeks as he pushed off the blocks of ice that were on her.

Hiccup pressed his ear on her chest, listening for a heartbeat. Please, he begged.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
He heard from himself, but not from her. Silence filled his ears. This time, not the calm and peaceful one. The empty silence.

"Astrid, plea-ase. Co-come ba- back" He cried, his body shaking with tears and sobs.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
Hiccup didn't hear the rushing footsteps of his parents as they ran to comfort her. He didn't the sobs of his friends as they gathered in a group hug. All he heard was the stupid heartbeat that he had and couldn't give to her.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
"Please, wake up, m'lady" He mumbled in between sobs. He couldn't believe that she was gone. No more 'babe's, no more light-hearted insults and teasing. No more.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
Just like her and her heartbeat. No more.

Hiccup woke up to a start. Panting and sweating heavily as he looked around, anxiously. A tear fell down his cheek, realizing his dream was a memory.

He put on his prosthetic leg, sighing, and walked out of his house, quietly so that he won't wake his parents.

Hiccup went to his dragon in the stables and smiled sadly at him. Bringing the dragon out of the building and mounting him, he flew off.

Unknowingly, he made his way to the place he always went to with her.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
He could still hear his heartbeat. He didn't know why it was still beating without her.

She was everything. She was the first thing he thought of when he woke up in the morning and she was the last thing he sees when he falls asleep at night.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
Every waking moment, he thought of her. Thinking of what might have been. Hiccup jumped off Toothless and stared at the moon from the cliff, wishing for her to come back.

Wishing for her Deadly Nadder to come flying by. Wishing for her to wave and wink at him as she flew home. Wishing for her to give him one last kiss.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
Why was the only thing he could hear since she died, was his heartbeat?!

Hiccup kicked a rock beside him in anger and annoyance. He didn't feel any pain. Pain was redefined for him.

Pain was losing someone who meant everything and not getting to say goodbye. Pain was losing Astrid.

He needed her back. It hurt so much to not have her. To not see her everyday. To not see her bright blue eyes.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
"What you're searching for isn't out there, Hiccup. It's in here. Maybe you just don't see it yet" He heard a voice in his head say. Astrid.

Even though she said the exact same words, this time the meaning was different. A tear rolled down Hiccup's face as he understood what she meant.

The first time, she told him that who he was, was in him. Now, she was telling him, that she would always be in his heart.

Astrid who he was searching for, had left this world and would never come back. But in his heart, she would always be there. He just needed to know that.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
He heard his heart once more and smiled. He knew that she was always going to be with him.
And that she would always find a way to remind him.

This kind of silence was a balance between the two. It brought peace to him, but also reminded him of great loss.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
"I love you" Hiccup whispered into the air, tears falling down from his face.

Astrid smiled back down from Valhalla and sighed. "I love you too" She whispered back.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump was all that Hiccup had heard. He smiled, knowingly.
